Abstract- India is an Agriculture dominated country. More than
80% of population is directly or indirectly dependent on the
agriculture sector. Natural calamities, weather conditions, social,
personal and financial problems are the major causes of affecting

in economic condition of India. Through the literature survey itis
identified that more than 20% problems are because of financial
reasons. The financial problems contribute cost of raw materials,
ing cost of production is more than the
production. This unbalance financial situation makes farmer to
fake loan from bank or Saokars. This vicious circle makes
farming unaffordable occupation. The application of lean si

1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Farming sector in India
Agriculture plays a vital role in Indian economy. About 54.6%
of the population is engaged in agriculture and allied activities
(census 2011) and it contributes 17.4% to the country’s Gross
Value Added (current price 2014-15, 2011-12 series). India
has total Geographical area of 329 million hectares and
agriculture covers about 50% of country’s geographical area,
Indian agricultural area can be divided into fifteen agro
climatic zones based on the variation in soil type, rainfall,
temperature and water resources. There are four major crop
seasons in India viz. Early Khari, Late Kharif, Rabi and

1.3. Farming Processes and Practices
‘The farming process consists of following major phases
planning and estimating cost of production, purchasing
farm preparation, seeds sowing, ploughing, irrigation,
care of crops through frequent use of fertilizers and pes
harvesting, storage of crops and selling of crop.

in the field of agriculture particularly after the green
revolution, There are four divisions in Maharashtra, indicating
the crop specialization, In which, Westem Maharashtra
consists Sugarcane, Wheat, Onions and other irrigated crops,

1.4.2 Indian Farmer’s Crisis: History and Background
Sued AES HESS
‘More than 50 per cent of rural labourers in India are dependent
‘on agricultural activity for their income. ‘The national data
show that the suicide rate was 9.7 per lakh population in 1995.
‘The rate of suicide in Vidarbha is even much more, about 88-
89 per lakh population in 2006 and the rate in Wardha district
‘was about 13 per lakh population in 2006, about 20 females
‘were also among the farmers who committed suicide and this
rate is further increasing every year.
1.4.3 Farmers Suicides Scenario of Maharashtra
Vidarbha is the home to 3.2 million cotton farmers. Over 200
suicides were from July 2005 to February 2006, In this state
alone there were almost 2 suicides a day in this eight month
period. According to a study by the government of
Maharashtra, almost 6 in 10 of those who kill themselves had
debts between $110 and $550. [14]
1.5 Causes of Farmers suicides
‘Through the exhaustive literature survey, it is found that the
major cause of farmers suicides are Indebtedness, family
problems, farming related issues, illness and other causes,
The following pie chart indicates the five major reasons for
farmers’ suicides with their actual percentages
machineries and because of natural calamities farmers
bbear huge financial loss.
1.6 Farming problems
Indian agriculture is plagued by several problems; s:
them are natural and some others are manmade. The m:
