Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis

Date: February 6, 2000 Due: February 14, 2002

PROGRAMMING ASSIGNMENT No. 2

Use Program 1 from Programming Assignment No. 1 to develop the nonlinear analysis
capability to analyze straight beams using the Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam
theories with the von Kármán nonlinearity (see Chapter 4 for the finite element models and
numerical results). Be sure to keep a copy of Program 1 file safe in your computer
before you modify it to develop Program 2. Your program should have the direct
iteration and Newton–Raphson iteration solution options. You may validate your
program using the (a) hinged-hinged (roller supported) beam and (b) pinned-pinned beam
problems of Examples 3.3.1 and 3.3.2 of Chapter 3. Once you are sure that the program
is working, analyze (1) a clamped (at both ends) beam and (2) cantilever beam under
uniformly distributed load (of intensity, q0 ) using the (a) direct iteration as well as the
(b) Newton–Raphson iteration methods. Plot the nondimensional maximum deflection,
w̄ = wmax /L versus the load parameter, P̄ = q0 L3 /EI, with at least twelve points on the
graph. Use 2, 4, and 8 elements in half beam, with EA = 30 × 106 , EI = 30 × 106 /12, and
L = 100. Use proper load increment see significant nonlinearity in each problem.

You must submit: (1) a hard copy of the parts of the computer program that you have
modified, (2) input for the problems used to validate the program, and (3) plots/tables of
the numerical results obtained for the problems. Use a converegnce tolerance of ε = 10−3
and IT M AX = 10.
