Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis

Date: March 19, 2002 Due: March 26, 2002

ASSIGNMENT No. 6 (Program No. 5)

Penalty Finite Element Model of the Navier-Stokes Equations

You are required to develop a nonlinear finite element analysis computer program based on
the penalty finite element formulation and Direct iteration method to analyze steady-state flow
problems in two dimensions (see Chapter 7 of the Lecture Notes). Validate your program by
analyzing the problem of ‘wall-driven cavity’. Use uniform meshes of 8 × 8 and 16 × 16 four-
node linear elements and corresponding meshes of nine-node quadratic elements; use a tolerance of
¯ = 0.01 for convergence-check on the velocity field. Solve the problem for the Reynolds numbers,
Re =100, 500 and 1,000. Give converged nonlinear solutions (output), and plots of (a) horizontal
velocity along the vertical centerline of the cavity, and (b) pressure along the lid of the cavity. You
may plot results of various meshes and elements on multiple graphs.
