Let’s say a is an integer and a ≠ 0,
Then a ÷ a = 1

Division of any number by zero (0) is not meaningful. Therefore, we

REMEMBER cannot divide by 0.

• Division is the inverse operation of multiplication.

• Dividing an integer by another integer does not always gives an

SUMMARY integer.

• Dividing positive integer by positive integer or negative integer by

negative integer results in positive integer.

• Dividing positive integer by negative integer or negative integer by

positive integer results in negative integer.

• Dividing integer by same integer always results in 1.

• Dividing integer by 1 always results in same integer.

EXPLAIN
Observation is one of the greatest powers in the
universe

Hi kids, today we will learn about properties of

multiplication and division of integers.

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to

identify and apply some of the properties to make
your calculations easier.

1. Multiplication and Division of Integers.

We already know that the multiplication is repeated addition and division is the
inverse operation of multiplication.

In last two modules we learnt that:

1st number 2nd number Multiplication Division

Positive Positive Positive Positive
Negative Negative Positive Positive
Positive Negative Negative Negative
Negative Positive Negative Negative

2. Closure property

3 × 4 = 12 12 ÷ 4 = 12

3×0=0 (-6) ÷ 3 = -2

3 × (-4) = -12 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5

The product of two integers The division of two integers

is always is an integer. is not always is an integer.

66 66
Copyright © 2017-18 Winspark Innovations Learning Pvt. Ltd. All Rights Reserved.
3. Commutative law

5 × (-7) = (-7) × 5 4 ÷ (-4) = (-4) ÷ 4

0 × (-5) = (-5) × 0 5 ÷ (-7) ≠ (-7) ÷ 5

3×4=4×3 6÷3≠3÷6

For any integers a and b, we have: For any integers a and b, we have:
(a × b) = (b × a) (a ÷ b) ≠ (b ≠ a)

Therefore, multiplication of integers Therefore, division of integers is

is commutative. NOT commutative.

4. Associative law

(2 × 3) × 4 = 2 × (3 × 4) (2 ÷ 3) ÷ 4 ≠ 2 ÷ (3 ÷ 4)
{(-2) × 3} × 4 = (-2) × (3 × 4) {(-2) ÷ 3} ÷ 4 ≠ (-2) ÷ (3 ÷ 4)
(0 × 3) × 4 = 0 × (3 × 4) (0 ÷ 3) ÷ 4 = 0 ÷ (3 ÷ 4)
For any integers a and b, we (2 ÷ 3) ÷ 1 = 2 ÷ (3 ÷ 1)
have:
If a, b, c are integers with a ≠ 0 and c ≠ 1 then,
(a × b) × c = a × (b × c)
(a ÷ b) ÷ c ≠ a ÷ (b ÷ c)
Therefore multiplication of
integers is associative. Therefore division of integers is NOT associative

67 67

5. Distributive law of multiplication over addition.

2 × (3 + 4) = (2 × 3) + (2 × 4)

{2 × (3 + (- 4)} = (2 × 3) + {2 × (- 4)}

{(-2) × (3 + 4)} = {(-2) × 3) + {(-2) × - 4

For any integers a and b, we have:

(a × b) × c = a × (b × c)

6. Relationship with 1

6×1=6
6 ÷ 1 = 12
(-4) × 1 = -4
(-4) ÷ 1 = -4
0×1=0
0÷1=0
For every integer a, we have
For every integer a, we have
(a ×1) = (1 × a) = a
(a ÷1) = a
1 is called the multiplicative identity
for integers.

7. Relationship with inverse

6÷6=1

(-5) ÷ (-5) = 1

0 ÷ 0 = not meaningful

This is same as multiplicative

inverse.

If a is an integer and a ≠ 0, then

a ÷ a = 1.

68 68
Copyright © 2017-18 Winspark Innovations Learning Pvt. Ltd. All Rights Reserved.
8. Property of zero

8×0=0×8=0 0÷6=0

(-6) × 0 = 0 × (-6) = 0 6 ÷ 0 = not meaningful

0×0=0 0 ÷ 0 = not meaning

For every integer a, we have: If a is an integer then,

(a × 0) = (0 × a) = 0 (a ÷ 0) is meaningless.

• The product of two integers is always an integer while

division of integers is not always an integer.
SUMMARY • Multiplication of integers is commutative and division of
integers is not commutative.
• Multiplication of integers is associative and division of
integers is not associative.
• Multiplication complies with distributive law of
multiplication over addition.
• 1 is called the multiplicative identity for integers.
• Multiplication of any integer with zero equals zero and
division of any integer by zero is meaningless.
