Research Project:

How many hours can a student work without

affecting their studies?

Jordan Chappelear, Yijia Huang, and Diana Medina

Zamora
Years of Study
● The majority of
students in EDT are
freshmen.
● More than half of
the percentage of
EDT students are
freshmen.
● Seniors represent
only 5% of the
class.
Weekly Hours
● On average, students
work 13.7 hours per
week.
● The maximum number of
weekly hours worked
was 45 hours.
● The median was 6.9
hours.
● Three quarters of
students work less than
2o hours a week.
Days or Nights
● Most freshmen are
working in the morning
only or both day and
nights.
● The amount of
sophomore, junior and
senior working is much
lower than freshmen.
● Most people don’t think
work at night is good for
their studying.
On Campus or Off Campus ● Overall, more students
work off campus than
on campus.
● Out of the 89
respondents, 70
students work off
campus, and 42% of
those students are
freshmen.
● The freshmen who
work on campus make
up 16% of students in
EDT.
Responsibility Scale
● 21 students believe they
can handle working and
attending classes
responsibly at an 8.
● The median lies in the
middle of number 7.
● Only 13 students
responded below 5 to
adequately manage all
responsibilities.
Changes in GPA
● Nearly half of freshmen
students believe their GPA
has remained the same
while holding a job.
● For all years of study, an
equal number of students
feel their GPA has
increased as well as
decreased.
Conclusion
1. Freshmen work more than higher grades in ASU and they usually only work
during the day, so they might have free time to study at night.
2. Most students choose to work off campus and according to the weekly
hour, they are not overworked, so they can adjust their study and work
time well.
3. In the responsibility scale, the mode displays that most students can
adequately grasp the balance between study and work.
4. Most students think their grades are not seriously affected by their jobs.
Therefore, students in ASU can well handle their working with studying.
