SYLVIA HERNANDEZ

Dear Ms. Figueroa,

As a writer my biggest challenge was creativity. The prompts where there and I

was given everything I needed to accomplish a paper and still, I struggled. I lacked

passion and motivation, so I made it a journey to overcome these challenges. I

started with learning myself and what motivated me to write. If I found myself

struggling, I would give up and procrastinate. Once I knew I did not have enough

to finish writing done to finish the paper, I did anything I could to reach a word

count, thus, resulting in a not so good paper. As I reflected on each piece of writing

it became clear to me that I had to use less logic in writing my papers and more

emotion. I had the same writing goal for every essay, but each reflection had

similar factors. I have always enjoyed using my voice as a tool to voice others

whose voices are not heard. I had a voice that needed to be heard and I knew I

needed to use it more often. I have always enjoyed using my voice as a tool to

voice others whose voices are not heard.

As a writer, my grammatical aspects and spelling were always up to par, with the

exception a few grammatical errors within the MLA format guidelines. Reflecting

on all my papers made me come to the realization that I was getting better as a

writer although I was not aware of it. Initially, the bodywork in my portfolio was
not the greatest, after going through and editing several essays, I become aware of

what my common mistakes were. The comments from my teacher guided me

through editing on how I could improve my paper, without them I would have been

lost, not knowing where to start. At first glance, all the papers I have written

looked fine. After revising them, the work was much better, and you can see the

progress throughout my writing.

The paper I am most proud of is my social issues paper, it brought light to an issue

that does not get a lot of attention through the media. I surprised myself while

writing this paper because I was not rushing to meet a word count but instead, I

spent more time constructing my arguments, looking for real life scenarios and

researching. Once my research was complete, my fingers seemed to freestyle on

the keyboard, I knew what point I wanted to get across with this paper and I did.

While editing and revising my papers, the most common themes I found were

justice, equality and righteousness.

Throughout the year my biggest accomplishment as a writer was breaking out of

my shell and using creativity to complete a paper. This was the biggest lesson I

could have learned through writing because I could hinder myself and my growth

by not breaking myself out of this shell. I was too comfortable where I was, I

thought I had no need to improve, but there is always room for improvement.
