1. GENERAL

Initial Load test is performed on a single cast in situ pile in

order to assess its performance relative to the load
bearing/settlement criteria. The method adopted in the project
would be maintained load method.

2. TEST METHOD

Six (6) Soil/Rock anchors will be installed to the required depth as
per the design calculations.

The inclined drilling will be carried out by DTH drilling Rig

up to required depth. The temporary guide casing will be provided
in the drill hole up to the required depth.

High tensile strands will be cut to

required length including free length required for anchoring on top
of the loading frame. The required number of strands are inserted
into the spacers and bundled with grout tube to form anchor cable.

The ends of the strands will be inserted into the bottom shoe
and grouted. The strand bundle will be gently lowered into the
drilled holes. Cement grout with water cement ratio 0.45 will be
pumped into the bore holes using electric grout pump. Admixture
Cebex 100 will be used.

The bond length shall be as per the design calculations. The

grouting will be done for the fixed length of the anchor and balance
will be the free length. Grout cubes 100mm will be casted during
grouting operations. It will be tested before the pile test for a
minimum compressive strength of 20N/mm2 at 7 days. The grouted
cables shall not be disturbed for 72 hours after homing.

B) Preparation of pile

The pile will be exposed by excavating around the pile up to

500mm below the test level. The test level will be marked on the
pile surface and extra concrete will be chipped off carefully and pile
top will be trimmed off to a plain and level surface. If during the
chipping, weak concrete is met with at the test level, further
chipping shall be carried out till good concrete is met with and the
pile will be then built up to the test level with the same or higher
grade of concrete.
After final preparation, a steel bearing plate 40mm or 50mm
thick will be set centrally on top of the pile head by pouring non
shrink grout for leveling if required.

C) Test Setup

The loading frame capable of carrying full load shall be used

for the test. Load test on the piles shall be performed on maturity of
grout strength for the rock anchors i.e., 28 days after primary
grouting of the cables for the fixed zone length.

Layout of the reaction assembly will be marked on the

ground and ground around the surface is compacted properly. The
jacks are placed on the steel plate and loading frame will be
lowered and leveled.

The reaction frame is carefully aligned and leveled to ensure
the anchor holes are matching the axis of the anchors on the
ground.
The tendon strands are then carefully threaded
through the loading frame and each strand is inserted through the
anchor hole. The wedge plate is inserted on each of the anchor and
wedges inserted on to each strand. Each anchor is loaded to 5 to
10% of UTS of the strand in such sequence as to maintain the even
distribution of load across the test rig.

A) Arrangement of the load testing

The arrangement for load testing was as given in the figure below (for
1200mm dia pile):
B) Load Application

The loading will be applied to the test pile using hydraulic

jacks reacting against the loading frame which will transfer the load
to the rock anchors.

The jacks will be carefully aligned on the steel plate to ensure

transfer of load axially thorough the pile centre.

The loading applied will be measured by observing an inline,

calibrated pressure gauge, installed into the hydraulic system.

As the application of load will be done in pre

determined intervals, all the calculations for observing the pressure
corresponding to the load required to be applied will be done prior
to the commencement of the test.

The pressure gauge will be calibrated trough an approved

laboratory and calibration certificate and charts will be kept in hand
before commencement of the test.

D) Measurement of displacement.

The displacement of the test pile is monitored at the four

individual points using micrometer dial gauges duly calibrated
having a least count of 0.01mm. These are securely mounted on
independent reference beams which will be fixed at a minimum
distance of two test pile diameters from the centre of the pile.

E) Test Procedure

Cube test results:

Before commencement of the load test, the concrete
cubes/grout cubes cast during pile casting/grouting of anchors will be
tested and compressive strength will be recorded. The strength

obtained thus will be verified against the target strength specified of
the respective concrete/grout grade.

Loading:
Maintained load method shall be followed in this test. The
total load shall be applied in increments of 20% of design
design load and
deflection shall be noted. The loading will follow the loading
sequence chart attached. For each load increment applied, the
displacement will be measured at the time intervals mentioned in
the recording schedule attached.

Each load incitement is held for as specified minimum period

or until such time the rate of settlement is less than or equal to the
specified rate as per the IS: 2911 Part IV.

The loading is then increased to the next value and similar

procedure is followed. All results are recorded upon the attached
record sheet.

Allowable load based on permissible settlement is least of –

2/3 of the final load at the which total displacement attains a value
of 18mm and 50% of the final load at which the total displacement
equal to 10% of the pile diameter.
