Reactor transport from Linz to Burghausen

The fascination ”heavy transportüalways poses a logistic challenge to people and

machines. So, the transport of a reactor with 193 tons in weight and 7,1 m in width
for plastic manufacturing was preceded by a logistic masterstroke.
About 10 people were busy for 7 months to work out the best possible transport
route and to carry out corresponding preparatory work to transport both reactors. Up
to 10 bridges were to cross along a 90 km distance which required in some cases
extensive static recalculations.

The first 100 km section was covered by ship from the Felbermayr-heavy duty-port of
Linz to Winterhafen in Passau. Meanwhile, the Felbermayr-crew set up its strongest
crane (LR 1750) - with a maximum capacity of 1000 tons - in the port of Passau.
Upon arrival of the reactors by ship, they were reloaded onto the special lowloaders
which were already prepared for the job.

Due to the fact that some roads were very small, the lowloaders had to be very short.
That is why the project manager Gunther Wimmer decided to use the Goldhofer
heavy duty combination type THP/ST to transport the 193-ton reactor. Unique is that
Felbermayr has a so-called ”split trailer versionü
. This means that all heavy duty
modules could be mid splitted in length which made it possible to spread the weight
of the load in vehicle length and width. The result was more than 50 tons axle load
per axle line.

The big reactor on 1

vehicle width

Moreover, the 32 m long reactor was carried by a longload combination with self-
steering rear bogie. The reactor being resting on freely moving bolsters, the
combination was much better manoeuvrable in narrow curves and on small roads.
The second reactor with a diameter of 6 m and a length of 25 m was conveyed on a
16-axle Goldhofer heavy duty combination type THP/LTSO.
In the early morning Max Schwarz started his 800 hp A AF truck and the colossus
drive off slowly. The push tractor was a 530 hp MB-truck. For the smaller reactor, a
600 hp O AF tractor and a 600 hp Titan push truck were used. The first section was
covered on the motorway, which had to be closed completely. Already after some

kilometres, the convoy left the motorway and came to the B 512. Here, the
Felbermayr-crew showed how good it completed its tasks.

Already beforehand, road signs

were turned over and power
supply lines were raised. Every
problematic situation was
detected meticulously and
prepared just before the convoy It was constantly necessary to place steel
arrived. plates over the traffic islands.

Always accompanied by a number of escorting vehicles such as police, BF3-

vehicles, elevating platforms, etc. and bordered by a lot of bystanders and
photographers, who wanted to witness the fascination very closely, the convoy rolled
unstoppably forward on the small Bavarian roads.

Ever again complete sections of roads had to be closed and the traffic detoured.
Bridges had to be crossed constantly which was one of the most difficult jobs of the
transport crew, because the curve radii of entries and exits were very small.

Whereas the small

reactor could pass under
the bridge, the big one
with its height of more
than 8,5 m had to pass
over the bridge.

However, the Goldhofer trailers easily

steered into each curve, no matter how
narrow it was. And the rear bogie
longload combination could constantly
prove its power because each trailer
could be steered in any direction.

Though the gigantic

colossus crept forward
on its 240 wheels, it
was very
manoeuvrable, which
amazed the
bystanders.

While crossing traffic islands, the advantages of the Goldhofer heavy duty modules
were visible. Due to the hydraulic axle compensation of up to 600 mm even
extremely high differences in height could be overcome.

Also the motor saw

was part of the
standard tools of the
crew, as in some
situations even tree
branches had to be
removed.

With combined effort and 1900 HP, also this

upgrade could be achieved.

Despite the rainy weather, the transportation was good in time. Only initially, a 13 %
upgrade posed problems to the transport crew, which were however solved. Since
the 1300 hp was not sufficient to move the heavy combination, the Titan truck with
600 hp (of the small reactor transport) was added in front. With combined effort and
1900 hp, the convoy chugged along for the 2 km upgrade. And so it reached its
destination in Burghausen - without incident and on schedule - where the crawler
crane was already prepared for the unloading procedure
