SINGLE LANE ROAD BRIDGE (S.L.R.B.

)
DESIGN OF DECK SLAB

Clear span = 9.00 m

Thickness of slab proposed = 0.65 m
Dia of main reinforcement = 25.00 mm
Clear cover = 40.00 mm
Width of bearing = 0.50 m
Thickness of wearing coat = 0.08 m

Over all span provided "L" = 10 m

Effective depth = 650 - 40 - 25/2

= 597.5 mm

Effective span:
C/C of supports = 9 + 0.5/2 + 0.5/2
= 9.500 m
Clear span + effective depth = 9 + 0.5975
= 9.598 m

Least of the above is effective span = 9.500 m

Carriage way details:

Width of carriage way = 4.25 m
Total width of deck slab = 4.25 m

As per IRC: 21-2000, clause 305.16.3, dispersion of load along the span equal to the
dimension of the tyre contact area over the wearing surface of the slab in the direction of
the span plus twice the overall depth of the slab inclusive of the thickness of the wearing
surface.

Longitudinal dispersion width = Tyre width + 2 x (depth of slab + WC)

Check for effective depth:

Design constants:
Grade of concrete R.C.C. M 25
σcbc = 8.33 N/mm2
σst = 200 N/mm2
m = 10
k = 0.294
j = 0.902
Q = 1.105

Maximum BM due to DL + LL = 349.213 Kn - m

Effective depth required for the above B.M. d = √M/ (Q b)

= SQRT [349.213 x 10^6 / (1.105 x 1000)]

= 562.165 mm
Effective depth provided = 597.5 mm Hence SAFE

Since the effective depth provided is more than the required, the design SAFE

Area of steel required :

Area of steel required = Ast = M / σst j d
= 349.213 x 10^6 / (200 x 0.902 x 597.5)
2
= 3239.783 mm

Min. area of steel required = 0.12 % od bD

= 0.12 x 1000 x 650 / 100
2
= 780 mm
Area of steel at mid span shall be provided for the max. of above two casses
2
= 3239.783 mm

Diameter of the bar = 25 mm 490.874

Spacing required using 25 mm dia bars = 490.874 x 1000 / 3239.783
= 151.514 mm
say 125 mm c/c

2
There fore the area of steel provided = 3926.992 mm

Provide 25 mm dia bars at 125 mm c/c as main reinforcement

Check for SHEAR:

Max shear force = 168.274 KN
Nominal shear stress TV = V/bd

Wdith of the beam b = 1000 mm

Effective depth of the beam d = 597.5 mm

Nominal shear stress TV = 168274 / 1000 x 597.5

2
= 0.282 N/mm
As per table 24 of IS 456:2000, the max permisible shear stress for M25 grade of concrete are
2
= 1.9 N/mm
As per Cl. B.5.2.3.1 For slabs the Max shear stress shall not more than half of above value
2 2
= 0.95 N/mm > 0.282 N/mm
Hence SAFE

2
Area of steel provided = 3926.992 mm

% of steel provided = 100 Ast / b d = 100 x 3926.992 / 1000 x 597.5

Permisible shear stress Tc from table 23 of IS:456-2000 for given % of steel for grade M 25
2

Shear resisted by the concrete Vc = Tc b d

= 0.341 x 1000 x 597.5

= 203.748 KN

2
Ast of bent up bars = 0 mm
Shear resisted by bent up bars = 175 x 0 x 0.707
= 0N
= 0 KN

In no case shear resisted by bent up bars are more than 50% of Total shear force
There fore Max shear resisted by bent up bars are = 0 KN

Total shear resisted by concrete + bent up bars = 203.748 + 0

= 203.748 KN
= > 168.274 KN
Hence SAFE
Since the shear resisted by concrete & bent up bars are more than the required, Design of
reinforcement from shear criteria is not needed. HENCE O.K.

such as dead loads, Shrinkage, Temperature etc.

Moment due to LL = 144.74 Kn - m

Moment due to DL = 204.473 Kn - m

Total BM for distribution steel are = 0.3 x 144.74 + 0.2 x 204.473
