Mathematics 7th Grade – Ratio & Rate

1) There are 17 boys and 19 girls in a class. Find ratio of:


i) the number of boys to the number of girls
ii) the number of girls to the number of boys
iii) the number of boys to the number of all students

2) Simplify each of the following.


a) 600 gram : 1.6 kg

3) Given that 3a : 7 = 8 : 5, find the value of a!

4) The ratio of the number of female participants to the number of male


participants at a party is 4 : 9. If there are 30 more male participants than female
participants, calculate the total number of people who attended the party.

5) Kevin and Nelly each have a sum of money. The ratio of the amount of money
Kevin has to that of Nelly is 3 : 5. After Nelly gives $150 to Kevin, the ratio of
the amount of money Kevin has to that of Nelly becomes 7 : 9. Find the sum of
money Kevin had initially.

6) If x : y = 11 : 8 and y : z = 6 : 7, calculate:
i) x:y:z
ii) x:z

7) A sum of money is divided among Devi, Lixin, and Shirley in the ratio 9 : 8 : 7.
After Devi gives $25 each to Lixin and Shirley, the ratio becomes 16 : 17 : 15.
Calculate the amount of money Devi had initially.

8) Find the number that must be added to 3 and 8 so that the ratio of the first
number to the second number becomes 2 : 3.

9) Amirah can type 720 words in 16 minutes, Lixin can type 828 words in 18
minutes and Shirley can type 798 words in 19 minutes. Who is the fastest
typist?
10) Khairul pays $6 for parking his car in a shopping centre for 2.5 hours. Calculate

i) the parking charges per minute


ii) the amount that he will have to pay if he parks his car in the shopping

centre for 1 4 hours.

11) In a competition, 5 peoples can finish 20 steamed buns in 3 minutes 20


seconds. Assuming that everyone consumes steamed buns at the same rate
and that the rate of consumption remains constant throughout the competition,
find the number of steamed buns 10 peoples can finish in 5 minutes.

12) Rudi borrows $1000 from a financial institution that charges simple interest at
a rate of 4% per annum. Calculate the amount of interest he has to pay at the
end of 3 years.

13) A washing machine is priced at $450. A man buys the washing machine on hire
purchase according to the following terms: a downpayment of 15% and the
remaning to be pain in monthly instalments over 2 years at a simple interest

rate of 10 3 % per annum. Calculate:
i) his monthly instalment,
ii) the total amount the man pays for the washing machine.

14) The rates of exchange between Australian dollars (A$), Malaysian ringgit (RM)
and Singapore dollars (S$) are A$1 = S$1.2844 and RM100 = S$41.234.
Convert:
i) A$543
ii) RM4850
into Singapore dollars, giving your answer correct to the nearest cent.
