Treatment Versus Prescription

Depression is a psychological condition described by sentiments of serious

distress and discouragement, additionally with sentiments of insufficiency and guilt.

Consistently, about 16 million Americans encounter depression and look for treatment. For many

people who are diagnosed with this mental illness are finding a way to deal with it can be

difficult. There are two different ways of treating this illness as of now. First, there is

psychotherapy and the second is medications; antidepressants especially. Psychotherapy has

more than one direct way of helping a person with depression and different forms of therapy like

cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT gives patients devices to address unsafe

considerations, feelings and practices. By giving patients social help and encouraging them

adapting abilities. Another thing is that a background marked by injury right off the bat in life is

firmly associated with shrinkage of the hippocampus, a cerebrum district basic to memory and

learning. Antidepressant medications work by changing signals in the mind. Antidepressants

might be compelling for treating depression in a few patients, yet how effective are these

treatments compare to one another? What is the better option?

Some will say that patients may want to take prescription for their depression as opposed

to work through psychotherapies. There are also the ideas that a few patients might not have an

approach to get to a psychological expert. There are additionally patients who may want to take a

pill in their home instead of taking therapy. I think that if this was to continue many people will

not know of how to properly care of themselves. It would start to look like some sort of sickness

that can be cured easily, but it is not. It as many symptoms that require more than just some pill.

I believe that therapy should have more ease to get into. There should be a way to get to therapy

and not have to worry about financial problems. There should also be a way to find a psychiatrist

that it’s well fitted for the patient. It can be proven that psychotherapy may have the upper hand

in the fact that it has no antagonistic reactions, can give people a better understanding of

depression and can help prevent depression from coming back.

First of the many reasons as to way therapy is better is because it mainly does not cause

any negative side effects. Medication has more risk than therapy, more than ever. As in example

here “these medications can have side effects such as nausea and vomiting,” (“To Treat

Depression: Therapy or Antidepressants?” 2017). Doctors tend to offer antidepressants

first in order to deal with depression. That means that many people first idea of a “cure”

is to vomit. Not only that these drugs are the go-to for many people because, “[many]

clinicians may lean towards medication treatment due to higher insurance,” (“To Treat

Depression: Therapy or Antidepressants?” 2017) to this extent it factors to the idea that

medication is the only way and may cause to addition at some extent. As seen medication is too

much of a risk.

The second factor is that if a person was to go into therapy instead, they will have a better

understanding about their depression. It would allow for a person to know how to take care of

themselves better. As seen here “cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)…. this form of

psychotherapy help people living with depression find relief,” (“To Treat Depression: Therapy or

Antidepressants? “2017) this would allow patients with devices to address hurtful considerations,

feelings and practices. “There is always the American belief that a pill of one type or another, a

“magic bullet,”’ (Schwartz) as seen here people believe this in order to find a quick relief, and

people won't truly understand the pain. Not many people believe or rather understand why

therapy is more effective, but it will help many to understand.

This last reason so that it will help to prevent depression who have received it from

outside conflict and therapy can help prevent future episodes. As seen here “about a third

experienced parental loss, and 45 percent suffered physical abuse,” (,” Friedman 2015) many

people gain depression this way. Many would rather feel understood rather than popping a pill

and hoping for the best. “if you are depressed with a compromised hippocampus, you need the

active learning that comes with psychotherapy to beat your depression (Friedman 2015) this

mean that medication alone will not help a person at all. Many factors are needed to see how to

help someone.

To introduce an opposing point most people, believe that medication it the only way to

help a person with depression. Well yes, medication is required to help people who are born with

depression. That doesn’t mean they know how to deal with it. Proven here “best service

psychologists can offer their clients is educational information about their treatment options,”

(Whitbourne 2015). Another thing to point out is that many people offered by this had high

levels of satisfaction. With that said it would best to at least talk about it with a professional.

Another point to bring up it that many people don’t have the option to do that. Yes, it can

be difficult to find what an individual need, however it can be done. “insurance companies are

slowly beginning to reflect the changing tides,” (Walton 2016) that give the ability for people to

have a chance to therapy. It can also be said that less would be require in order to accomplish it.

With all of that said many people are going to have a chance to get into therapy. Money

will no longer be a big issue and people can see the way therapy can truly help more than

medications.

It tends to be demonstrated that psychotherapy may have the high ground in the way that

it has no opposing responses, can give individuals a superior comprehension of gloom and can

help keep discouragement from returning. Therapy causes no negative side effects while

medication has more hazards, like never before. Therapy being able to help people with

depression who have gotten it from outside and therapy can help forestall future scenes.
