Use appropriate modals in expressing permission, obligation, and prohibition.

III. PROCEDURE
A. Reviewing previous lesson/s or presenting the new lesson
MOTIVATION
 The teacher will play a video about a telephone conversation. The second part of
the video is muted and the students will be imitating the conversation by reading
the subtitle.
 After the video, the students will be asked about the video.
Task 1
Directions: Watch the video and listen carefully to the conversation. The second
part of the video is muted. Serve as the voice of the characters by reading thee subtitle.
Boys will read John’s line while girls will read Kate’s and her mother’s line.

Ask: “What is the video all about? Why did John call Kate? What are the agreements
between John and Kate?”

B. Establishing purpose for the lesson


 The students will write the following line from the video they watched.
o Asking for permission/request
 May I talk to Kate?
 Can I take the message?
o Prohibiting someone or refusal of request
 No, you can’t?
o Stating what someone is obliged to do or going to do?
 I will call again.

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson


 From the written line on the board, students will be asked to underline the VERB that
make them realized that it is a statement of request, of refusal to request, or of an
obligation.
 May I talk to Kate?
 Can I take the message?
 No, you can’t?
 I will call again.
Say: “For your awareness class, these verbs are also a helping verbs. These are what we
call modals.”

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1


 The teacher will discuss modals and present examples.

MODAL VERBS
Modal verbs are special helping verbs use to express a requests, permissions,
obligation and prohibition.
Permission
We use can to ask for permission to do something:
Can I ask a question, please?
Can we go home now?
could is more formal and polite than can:
Could I ask a question please?
Could we go home now?
may is another more formal and polite way of asking for permission:
May I ask a question please?
May we go home now?
We use can to give permission:
You can go home now if you like.
You can borrow my pen if you like.
may is a more formal and polite way of giving permission:
You may go home now, if you like.
We use can to say that someone has permission to do something:
We can go out whenever we want.
Students can travel free.
may is a more formal and polite way of saying that someone has
permission:
Students may travel free.

Instructions and requests:


We use could you and would you as polite ways of telling or asking
someone to do something:
Could you take a message please?
Would you carry this for me please?
Could I have my bill please?
can and will are less polite:
Can you take a message please?
Will you carry this for me please?

Obligation and necessity


We use must to say that it is necessary to do something:
You must stop at a red light.
Everyone must bring something to eat.
You can wear what you like, but you must look neat and tidy.
We use shall, should, will to say that it is something you have to do.
I will go to the bathroom.
You should study harder.
You shall obey your parents.

Prohibition
We use the negative form of the previously stated modals to state refusal
or prohibition
You can’t go home without our teacher’s permission.
You must not disrespect your parents.
I won’t give up.
You shouldn’t do that.
E. Developing mastery

•Each group will be given a specific scenario. They will write a short dialogue about the
scenario designated to them. They have to use modals of permission, obligation and
prohibition and underline the modals used.

GROUP ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Write a short dialogue about the given scenario. Use modals of
permission, obligation and prohibition and underline the modals used.

Scenarios:
Group I
A teacher is discussing a lesson and you have to meet someone for an
important reason but your teacher disallowed you to go. So, you will reason out to
have her permission.
Group II
The school organized an educational field trip and you want to join. You’re
asking your parents to sign the waiver so you can join, but your parents don’t want
you to go since they are not able to accompany you. To have their permission, you
promise them that you’ll be careful and responsible throughout the fieldtrip
Group III
You and your friend decided to sleep over in your house. However, her
parents did not allow her. To permit you friend, you call her parents and please
them.
Group IV
You are in a mall with your father. While walking around, you see the dress
that you really love. You ask your father to buy the dress however he did not and
said that you have to perform better in school to buy that. You really want the dress
so you please him to buy it now and you promise to do better in school.
F. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living
 Why do you think it is important for you as a student to know these modal verbs
and be able to properly use it.
G. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson
 The teacher will read an incomplete statement and students will tell the best modal
verb to be used.
H. Evaluating learning
Directions: Write at least 5 statement for each types of modal verbs.
