Problems Identification

The aim of this project is to increase passage rates on the written portion of the state certification test among English language
learners who are enrolled in the STNA program at Quality Care Academy & Staffing through access to intensive academic
vocabulary and medical terminology acquisition instruction. STNA Training requires 75 hours of classroom and lab
instruction, and 16 hours of clinical experience in a residential facility. The overall program is designed to be completed over a
2.5 weeks plus additional time to earn additional optional certifications such as CPR and First Aid. Due to time constraints of
the overall training program, the addition of this program must be focused and specific. The specific goals of this program
were designed based on the feedback of directors of current STNA training programs. Based on feedback provided by the
Nursing Director of Quality Care Academy & Staffing and other similar training programs, approximately 30% of students who
successfully complete the instruction, hands-on lab requirements, and clinical rotations, are unable to pass the state required
test in order to get certified required for employment due to language difficulties because English is not their first language.
The Nursing Director has also observed lower grades on vocabulary quizzes and difficulty among English Languages Leaners
to grasp the medical vocabulary throughout the course. The goal of this project is to increase passage rates among English
language learner STNA trainees by increasing their access to intensive vocabulary instruction designed to increase their
interactions with academic language and job specific medical terminology.

Instructional Delivery

Access to limited technology among trainees requires that delivery be available in a learner-centered self-paced blended
format so that students can complete lessons regardless of their limited access to technology. This may require creating
instruction that can be completed with paper and pencil, as well as using a computer.
