Leading and Managing Organisational Resources

Unit Name LEADING AND MANAGING ORGANISATIONAL RESOURCES

management, finance and information systems which is essential for adding value and achieving competitive

systems and the international management of innovation and change. Successful completion of the unit will give
you a comprehensive and detailed overview of theory and practice and you will acquire a ‘toolkit’ that provides the
potential for inspirational leadership and the effective management of organisational resources.
Operations Management addresses issues such as quality, location process layout, capacity management, and
scheduling and inventory management. Global sourcing and relocation are now commonplace and the competitive
environment demands new ways of thinking about how to manage operations in a global context. Business and
information systems facilitate decision-making and effective management across all functions. You will develop an
understanding of how changes in the business strategy, the business operations and the funding of these operations
can impact on the reported financial statements, their cash flows and thus impact on both share price and the
reported results of a company.
Syllabus Content Leadership and Management Responsibilities

report of 3000 words.
2. You are required to critically evaluate a live project or a case study of a contemporary organisation considering
the integration and effectiveness of pertinent topics relating to leadership, operations, information systems and
their impact on the financial statements. You will present your analysis and findings as a Business Report of

Digital Marketing & Communication (Marketing Specialisation)

Unit Name DIGITAL MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION
Credit Value 30
Aims and Relevance Marketing has become an increasingly vital ingredient for managers and business success. Organisations that neglect
their marketing activities and operations are doomed to failure.
Digital platforms are not only revolutionising marketing, but creating new business models and new methods of
social interaction. This unit explores the effects on management, business, economics, sociology and ethics.
For organisations some of the key questions are: what do my customers want; how do potential and actual customers
view my offering; how do I make my product or service different; how much shall I charge for it and where/how
do I 'talk about' it and make it available? All of these questions are of course posed in a context of competition
and in a political, economic, socio-cultural and technological framework that is constantly evolving. The motto
for organisations often is 'change or die'. A key component of any Marketing unit is the ability to communicate
effectively, thus bringing together new technological developments as well as economic, sociological and political
changes combined with the extent to which academic theory matches practice.
The unit therefore aims to engage you with a critical understanding of 21st century business marketing and
communication in practice for managers

Management Practice (Dissertation Stage)
Unit Name MANAGEMENT PRACTICE
Credit Value 15
Aims and Relevance Practice events are integral to the University of Bedfordshire Business School’s vision to take business education,
research and practice in exciting new directions. Central to this vision is the aspiration to give you the skills
and knowledge to find the career and future success you want. We aim to develop intelligent practitioners who
imaginatively integrate theory and practice.  You will need to select and apply knowledge and principles you have
learnt through the taught MBA units, experiential learning activities and challenges to develop an understanding of
current realities in work organisations and be better placed as a future manager.
This unit is specifically designed to help your transition into the professional work environment through combining
academic rigour with practice skills: the behaviours, attributes and intent which give you immediate impact in the
organisations you join. This produces individuals with the confidence and know-how to fit in and be effective from day
one: managers who understand business context, and have the creativity, drive and focus to bring about change. The
aim of this unit is to:
»» Enhance your transition to the workplace through experiential learning
»» Improve your personal, interpersonal and business skills
»» Develop your awareness of professional working practice and increase your employability
Relate the theories learnt in the earlier stages of the MBA to real-word business practice issues.
Syllabus Content During the taught elements of the course you will already have experience in the application of theory to practice
in individual units and in the core integrated units. In real life work organisations integration is necessary and in
preparation for your transition to the work place on completion of the MBA this unit requires that you apply your
learning from the taught elements to a complex real life organisation. You will need to analyse the organisation
and draw on relevant theories and models from the MBA toolkit as necessary to inform your decision making and
evaluation the effectiveness of those decisions.
This might be achieved either through a live consultancy project or through a challenging business
simulation.
Live consultancy project:
»» Live consultancy project: Developing imaginative and effective solutions to opportunities and challenges.
»» You will be presented with a live project from a real work organisation.
Business Simulation (Group Work)
»» An in-depth consideration of issues in the implementation of strategic and operational decisions. The approach
taken in that phase is one of enquiry based learning (EBL).
»» You will normally work in groups of no more than 8 and no less than 5. Each group will, where possible, select
their own team participants.
»» There will be a preparatory session(s) to explain the EBL with tutors to guide your learning as a working group
and as an individual.

Unit Name MANAGEMENT PRACTICE
Assessment Methods You will engage in ONE of the following tasks:
Consultancy and Practice Skills
You will be presented with a live consultancy project for a real work organisation. In small groups your task is to draw
on relevant theories to develop imaginative and effective solutions to the opportunities and challenges presented.
You will need to clearly communicate your ideas to the client. Theoretical underpinning and the development of
imaginative and effective solutions are essential for credibility.
You will prepare an individual report critically analysing the integration of theory and practice in developing
solutions to your client. This must be a professionally written and presented business report clearly and concisely
communicating your ideas through integration of theory and practice (3000 words).
Simulation: Business Game
You will participate in a competitive business game designed to simulate a realistic management situation and give
you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to think through the implications of applying the knowledge and skills
acquired through the taught elements of the course. You engage in the business game as a group. You will need to
set a strategy for your company within the competitive industry and make decisions about all aspects of the business
in order to implement the strategy effectively. Over successive periods in the game you monitor the performance of
your own business and the competition, adjusting your strategic and tactical decisions accordingly.
You will write an individual report of 3000 words on your performance in the game, showing how theory which you
have learnt on the course was demonstrated both in your management of your business and in the way the players
in your industry competed. Some specific questions will be provided for you to address and you will also have the
opportunity to highlight other areas of your own choice.

Theory into Practice Project (Dissertation Stage)
Unit Name THEORY INTO PRACTICE PROJECT
Credit Value 45
Aims and Relevance The unit aims to enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of management and business as well
as the skills essential to effective operation in a corporate, business, public sector or not for profit environment. It is a
unit specifically designed to help your transition into the professional work environment.
Syllabus Content The integrated application project is the culmination of the MBA programme. It is designed to give you the
opportunity to demonstrate your ability to think through the implications of applying the knowledge and skills
acquired through the taught elements of the course.
Its purpose is to bring together all the taught elements of the programme to reinforce their interrelationship and to
enable you to move forward from the understanding of a discrete knowledge base to combine knowledge in different
ways and increase your understanding in different areas through synthesis and exploration. Your research might take
the form of a literature based project.
Assessment Methods Theory, Decisions and Implementation
The TIP Project deepens your exploration of the implementation of business decisions. The assessment requires you
to consider in depth one aspect of the implementation of decisions. You will be offered a selection of topics or you
may select your own, subject to approval by your tutor. Subject to availability you may also choose a real life practice
project.
The first assessment requires that you develop your introduction and objectives for a deliverable in the form of a
strategy, implementation plan or similar, to move an organisation forward. This is an opportunity to explore in depth
how academic theory helps (or not) to support managers in the implementation of plans and decisions. You will need
to identify the area for investigation and provide an indication of the topic and theories you might use to inform
your investigation, using a range of good quality and appropriate secondary sources. Your work must be presented
as a Poster. You will submit a project outline (1500 words) in week 5 and deliver a presentation in Week 6. (20%
Weighting)
Your final assessment, your report should be a deep consideration of a specific topic, drawing on a wide range of
academic sources, including peer-reviewed material, and using practical examples and cases to illustrate your points.
The emphasis of the work is to consider the practical issues involved in making decisions, achieving change and
managing the implementation of strategy. Your work must be submitted as a professional Business Report of 7500
words. Staged submissions are required through the online journal on the BREO site. (80% weighting).
