Creedence Clearwater Revival

San Francisco's own "Southern" rockers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, scored a string of
international hits during their brief existence, becoming classic rock staples despite
performing only four years. Led by John Fogerty, the four-man group had worked ten years
as a bar band and recorded several singles on the Scorpio label (under the forgettable name
the Golliwogs). But it was their self-titled debut with Fantasy Records in 1968 that caught
the attention of the world. Thirty-five artists would cut covers of their classic "Proud
Mary," including Ike and Tina Turner. So popular was CCR worldwide that by 1970 the
group was consistently scoring hits on both the A and B sides of its singles, a feat
previously accomplished only by Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Their biggest selling album
would be 1970's Cosmo's Factory, which produced the singles "Travelin' Band," "Up
Around the Bend" and "Lookin' out My Back Door."
