STEP #1 - 3 minutes

Type the Objective. Paraphrase the underlined words. You may use www.thesaurus.com. Make
sure the word you choose sounds right in the context. (context = sentence)

I will summarize an informational text.

STEP #2 - 5 minutes - You may work with the person TO THE SIDE OF YOU

Answer these two questions, We will discuss briefly.

1. You are living in an alternate universe. You are still on earth but this earth is different
from earth as you know it. On this earth, the Internet and smartphones were never
invented. (GASP!) How would you spend your free time?

2. You are still living in an alternate universe, but the year is now 2039. You are married
and have two children. The Internet and smartphones still have not been invented on
your planet. Tell me, how would you want your children to spend their free time?

STEP #3 - 3 minutes

Log in to Achieve. Find “Before Smartphones”. Go to the Thought Question tab. Copy and paste
the thought question onto this GoogleDoc.

STEP #4 - 5 minutes. You may work with the person TO THE SIDE OF YOU.

Look at the Thought Question carefully. Type at least THREE CATEGORIES of information you
would need to answer the Thought Question. You have five minutes to do this. We will discuss
and come up with CODES. If you want, you can HIGHLIGHT the words in the question that will
help you find the categories.

STEP #5 - 25 minutes - INDIVIDUAL WORK

When you get the STRETCH ARTICLE, start looking for the information in THOSE
CATEGORIES and identify the information using the CODES. You can do this in ONE of the
following ways:

1. Write the codes on TOP. HIGHLIGHT them with DIFFERENT colors. Then use THOSE
COLORS to highlight the article.

OR

2. UNDERLINE the information in the article. Write the code at the BEGINNING of the
sentence.

STEP #6 - On your GoogleDoc. Answer this question in a COMPLETE sentence:

How is this article related to SLE3?

SLEs are on my website (preyburn.weebly.com) under the Schoolwide Learning Expectations

Page.

Turn in your STRETCH ARTICLE to me with your name up top. If you finish before the 25
minutes are up, work on your OUTSIDE NOVEL project. Please look at the Outside Novel
Project page on preyburn.weebly.com for Due Dates.
Thought Question

Describe the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog in New York City, including some of the
museum's attractions. Then state whether or not you would like to visit the museum. Explain
your reasons. Use facts and details from the Article in your response.

STEP #1

Decide how you will describe the museum. Here are your choices:

Option #1

Start with the OUTSIDE of the building. When you describe the OUTSIDE, start with the
FLOOR, continue with the WALLS and end with the ROOF.

Continue with the INSIDE of the building. When describing the inside, start with the FLOOR,
continue with the WALLS, and end at the CEILING.

Option #2

Start with the OUTSIDE of the building. When you describe the OUTSIDE, start with the ROOF,
continue with the WALLS and end with the FLOOR.

Continue with the INSIDE of the building. When describing the inside, start with the CEILING,
continue with the WALLS, and end at the FLOOR.

STEP #2

Once you have chosen your option, make this chart and fill in with details from the article. Give
at least three details per box. These need to be from the article.

Inside Outside

CEILING 1. 1.
2. 2.
3. 3.

WALLS 1. 1.
2. 2.
3. 3.
FLOOR 1. 1.
2. 2.
3. 3.

STEP #3

Come up with a good opening sentence, the topic sentence should tell me the main idea of the
first paragraph, WITHOUT saying things like “I am going to describe…”. Remember, you will be
describing the museum. Your topic sentence can hint at the argument you will make in
paragraph #2.

STEP #4

Now start describing each part of the building, using the details you came up with. You may add
more if you like. Remember to arrange the details based on the option you chose. I should be
able to visualize what this place looks like, as if I were watching a movie.

STEP #5

Paraphrase the sentence in STEP #3.

STEP #6

Indent by hitting tab to start a new paragraph. This will be a MEAL paragraph.

STEP #7

Write your topic sentence, the MAIN IDEA/Argument. This sentence should tell me if you would
want to visit the dog museum or not.

STEP #8

Now you will give me two or three sentences with your EVIDENCE. The evidence should be
details from the article that support or backup your argument.

STEP #9

Now you need to ANALYZE/EXPLAIN how your evidence supports your opinion. Here you need
to talk about what types of things usually attract people to certain places. Do NOT just restate
details from the article.

STEP #10
Paraphrase the MAIN IDEA/ARGUMENT in STEP #7. This will be your LINK.
