Twitter is a social media site that I have never used much. The only times I ever went on

Twitter was when I was following a link from somewhere else to find out more information from

the primary source. After using the site and engaging in a Twitter Chat, I can see more of the

benefits behind using the platform. I was following #LangChat which was a conversation about

teaching languages to students in the classrooms. I found that many of the teachers participating

came from states back east. This could be due to the timing of the chat being at five pacific

standard time when many teachers on the west coast are just getting home or still creating lesson

plans for their students. It was also nice to see different languages like Spanish, French and

German be represented at different levels along with how long the teachers have been in that

subject.

That chat focused on topics that could help other teachers in their classrooms. The first

question was about the differences between language tasks, activities and exercises. Many of the

teachers agreed that language tasks were the most important because they allowed the students to

see an intentional use of the language. Two of the other questions were focused on student output

at lower and higher levels in the classroom. Seeing the teachers answer this question was

interesting as they were all able to explain how and why they used certain resources in the

classroom to benefit their students. These answers are what I found the most beneficial from the

Twitter Chat. If I were to participate in a Twitter Chat for my own grade level, or even a certain

topic I was interested in, it could help make me a more effective teacher in the classroom. It

would allow me to share my own resources and experiences while taking other’s ideas and trying

them in my own classroom. Regular tweeting would help benefit this as well as you could get

regular updates on how things are progressing in the classroom and how these tools have

benefited or become a nuisance to other teachers.
