Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: butterfly Life Cycle

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed:
S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of different living organisms
a. Ask questions to determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such
as a cat, dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a frog, and an insect such as a
butterfly.
Technology Standard Addressed:
Computational Thinker
5b. Students collect data or identify relevant data sets, use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in
various ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

Life cycle of a Butterfly

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: Students will be allowed to monitor and collect data on the monarch butterfly by comparing it to
the life cycle of other butterflies obtained by teacher for classroom observation and the website Journey North.
This will allow students to collect data outside the classroom on the monarch butterfly and information from
the website to make scientific investigations regarding the life cycle of a butterfly.
Students will also be allowed to upload their siting of the monarch butterfly and its eggs to the website and any
data collected that would be of interest to others. We will have class discussions and collect data regarding the
observations of the in-class butterfly aviary.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Computers with internet connection

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: We will collaborate within the classroom regarding the development of a hypothesis of the life
cycle of the butterfly. We will also be collaborating with others via Journey North regarding the
Monarch butterfly.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will be collecting data daily regarding the in-
class butterflies and any data collected for the monarch butterfly.
c. Higher-order thinking: Having students evaluate and compare the life cycle of the in-class butterfly to
the monarch butterfly which involves higher order thinking.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students will
be publishing their findings of monarch butterflies, their eggs, and/ larvae to the Journey North website
for an appropriate audience.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): We will be engaging in the content using various materials, including excel for
graphing/charting information collected regarding butterflies, texts, anchor charts, and handouts. The students will be collecting
authentic original data from multiple sources to using their investigation.
Engagement: Students will define vocabulary for the lesson and create logs for research using data collected.
Representation: Clarifying and analyzing vocabulary and data through multiple materials, and sharing their
data with others through appropriate websites.
Action and Expression: Optimize access to software and technology: Students will receive instruction and support for
using software and the use of research on the collaborating site Journey North in the classroom before doing the assignment.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: We will make sure the students are using the
website and technology under teacher’s supervision. Parents/guardians will need to give approval for their
student to use the collaboration site because they are under 13-year-old. When students are approved for
internet and collaboration site usage, they will be given a lesson on proper online etiquette and guidelines.

Reflective Practice: I feel that this activity could take their learning to the next level of engagement. The
technology base collaboration site would help keep the students engaged and motivated to collect data in and
outside of school. They will also receive authentic hands-on interaction with the butterflies and their life cycle.
