Job Title: Transmission Design Specialist

Department: Network Engineering Location: Lagos

Reporting to: Manager, IP & Transmission Design

Purpose statement: (The overall purpose of the role described in one sentence)

Manage configuration and setup on Vodacom Business Nigeria’s core network SDH and other Add / Drop
Multiplexer – ECI and other third party vendors.

Develop best practices for the deployment, maintenance, configuration and installation of ECI
multiplexers.

Principal Accountabilities/Objectives: (List the main objectives of the job to be achieved)

 Carry out detailed configuration tasks on Vodacom’s Multiplexer’s – ECI, Bejing HuanHuan, etc

 Manage and Monitor the core SDH network and its multiple digital Radio and fiber links and
networks, ensuring redundancy across the core circuits.

 Verify clocking status of all Multiplexers.

 Verify daily and weekly, the status of the chasis and Multiplexer cards.

 Backup and verify authenticity of the database on all Vodacom Multiplexers and Network
management systems with emphasis on the SDH / DWDM infrastructure

 Manage key customer communications for planned and emergency works.

 Update valid software on all System cards and multiplexer peripherals

 Review and Propose System changes on the SDH and core network to meet the changing
environment and technology.

 Ensure Spares and sparing needs are met.

 Ensure ALL Core system data including network diagrams are accurate and changes are
controlled.

 Configure backbone circuits with auto-reroute and protection attributes.

 Manage Rack space and allocation on ALL Vodacom data centers, ensuring efficient allocation
and equitable power distribution.
 Manage Antenna allocation on all Vodacom Business installed towers ensuring they are not
overloaded and equitable distribution
  Design and run the Vodacom Business SDH and DWDM network

 Identify and implement new methods of reducing CAPEX and OPEX costs (e.g. new
technologies, network modifications etc) along with network engineering teams.

 Capacity management on the backbone network. Monitor and document Network Utilization
on the Multiplexers, ensuring utilization doesn’t exceed 80% of configured capacity

 Design and implement backbone circuits that are redundant and ‘self-healing’
 Other tasks as may be assigned by the Manager, IP & Transmission design

Primarily with other Engineering teams, Installs, Projects and Vendor Management

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competency requirements: (List requirements for job to be
performed at fully competent level. In EU avoid age or time specific requirements ):

Thorough understanding of RF transmission concepts, TDM, SDH, PDH technology.

Have an understanding of IP routing and MPLS technologies. Unix / linux skills are an added advantage.

Good communication skills, ability to execute management requests and work under pressure, and have
the ability to work as a team player.
