Research Dossier: Communication in Nursing

Dossier Introduction

Within this research project, I hope to showcase the evolution of communication in

nursing due to the technological advances over the years. This topic is important not only for
other nurses or nursing students, but also the patients who are affected as a result. In order to
pursue this profession, it’s crucial to have a better understanding of where it all started and how
times have changed to more efficient methods of practice in the workplace. Especially with such
a highly demanded career, it can be interesting to uncover what attributes to patient success in
medical care. As a patient, it may be very rewarding to know what goes on during your stay and
may ease any apprehensions you may have with the process. Along with the patients, is their
families, who too would benefit from this research because any medical dilemma can be
alarming and by having a deeper knowledge of the medical field, it will put them more at ease
during recovery. Communication is critical in anything you do and even more so when there are
lives at risk. With the medical field constantly changing, I chose three perspectives of current
technology to examine more in depth, to see how it has affected nursing communication. These
include information technology, hands-free communication devices (Vocera’s Call Badge), and
video conferencing. The three of these stood out to me most because they’re all extremely
relevant in this time period, and although technologies are always improving, they appear to have
made a significant impact thus far. It was also important for me to not just select technologies
that I had never heard of because I feel like I can better relate to the study if I have a general
background of their usage, prior to the research at hand.
My research up to this point has provided a sufficient basis to answer my research topic.
So far, I have found sources outlining the three technologies and a background of how nurses
typically communicate in the workplace. I have arranged my annotated bibliography so it’s clear
which sources aid to the background, evidence, and methods, for when I conduct my analysis.
For the background, I plan on examining the articles “Communication and Technology: Ida
Orlando’s Theory Applied”, “Voice communications technology: healthcare provider
perceptions and satisfaction”, and “Futurism in nursing: Technology, robotics, and the
fundamentals of care”. For the evidence and methods of the three perspectives, I’m investigating
the articles “Voice communications technology: healthcare provider perceptions and
satisfaction”, “The use of information technology to enhance patient safety and nursing
efficiency”, “The value of WhatsApp communication in pediatric burn care”, “Introducing
Videoconferencing on Tablet Computers in Nurse-Patient Communication: Technical and
Training Challenges”, “Video Conferencing in Nursing Education Now Includes Telepresence
Robots”, and “Vocera Hands-Free Communication Improves Satisfaction for Patients, Nurses,
Research Dossier: Communication in Nursing 2

and Physicians at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital”. I was fortunate to have a fairly easy
research process so far, and I’m relieved to have found ample sources regarding my topic.
Throughout the research process I have found it very eye opening to see the great variety
of sources that are available on this topic and how different viewpoints come into play. Prior to
the research dossier, I initially wasn’t sure which perspectives would benefit my research topic,
but after viewing multiple sources from the database, it allowed me to gain a new insight of how
they would fit into my research. However, I am still investigating for additional sources that can
aid in my research, such as articles pertaining to how nurses’ communication with doctors has
been affected as a result of these three technologies. I think finding more on this area will serve
as a useful counterargument to the initial topic of communication with other nurses and their
patients. My other sources that I have already found help answer how nurses utilize forms of
communication and the ways in which the nurse-patient relationship is affected as a result. I also
plan on conducting an interview with a family friend who’s a nurse, which will help me gain a
greater insight on nursing communication firsthand. Some of the questions I plan on asking
include her point of view of the three forms of technology and how she feels it goes in hand with
her communication at work. By having an interview, I think it will add to the overall credibility
because the audience will get to hear the direct voice from an actual registered nurse, not only
the professionals from online texts. Through this research study, the overall motivation has
stayed consistent and I hope to continue to learn more about how nurses today communicate in
order to provide life-saving services.
