Module 6: Well Engineering
Lesson 1: Importing Well Data
Flow from the reservoir to the surface

Reference depth
Flow from the reservoir to the surface to surface
is modeled in multiple stages:
Well connection to
• Grid block to grid block
reference depth
• Grid block to well connection
• Well connection to reference

Well data import workflow
1. Import well head.

2. Import well path (deviation).

3. Import branching wells.

4. Import observed data.

Import Well Data: Well Header

Use the Well heads format to

import the well header location.

The table shows how Petrel

imports each column.

Import file header

information
Import Well Paths

1. Use the Well

path/deviation (ASCII)
format to import the well
trajectory.

2. Match the filename to an

existing well name.
Import Branching Wells

Use the Multiple well paths/ deviations

format to import wells with branches.
Specify the column
of the data.

Specify the well name

prefix.

Specify the number of

columns and data
type.
Well Spreadsheet
Make a Vertical Well

1. Click on a 3D grid or a map to get the X and

Y coordinates of the selected position in the
status bar.
2. Right-click on the Wells folder and select
New well from the drop-down menu.
3. In the Create new well dialog, enter a well
name, select a well symbol, and enter the
well head X and Y location.
Digitize Well Path
Use the Digitize well tool palette to:
 digitize on a General Intersection.
Display all data of interest:
 - Property
 - Horizons
 - Faults
 - Seismic.
 digitize on a filtered 3D grid
property.

Well Manager

Well manager is a tool for

viewing well data with the
associated attributes. Only
the enabled data fields of
the Well manager
spreadsheet are editable.
Vertical Well Intersection

1. Right-click the well and select Create

vertical well intersection.

2. Click Toggle visualization on

plane

3. Use the blue radio button to

display on the plane.
Synthetic Logs

1. Open the Make logs tab in the settings for the new well 1
and select a property.

2. Click the Make logs button.

1
3. Open the Style settings for the property from the Global
well log and select the Draw log as 3D pipe option.

Lesson 2: Well Completions Design
Well Completion Design
Completion Items in the Input Pane

Display the completions items stored in

the Input pane in the Wells folder by
toggling ON the check boxes.

Modify completion items with these tools:

 Well section window (Manual design)
 Completions manager
 Completion items Settings
 Automated design tool
 Global properties tool
Well Section Window (1)

1. Create and display Well

completions in Well sections.
1

2 Display a simulated property

(such as oil saturation) through
time for a selected well.

NOTE: Mouse over the displayed grid 2

property in a well section to show the
value of the property.
Well Section Window (2)

Well section window

allows you to display
multiple wells.

3D Grid properties can

also be displayed as a
background object
including 3D grid
simulation results when
wells are SSTVD.

Toggle synchronized
scrolling and scaling.
Insert a Completion Item

1. Active the Well completion design process.

2. Click Add/edit a perforation from the

2
function bar.

3. Click in the Completions track panel to insert a

new perforation. 3

4. Enter a date for the perforation.

Completions Manager

Drag any column header

into the dark gray area to
group well data based on
the content of that column.

Use the drop-down lists to filter.

Completions Manager: Equipment Tab
Use this tab to define new equipment. The equipment defined here can be used by one
or more completion items.
Well Completion Design: Operations (1)

Create and modify completion items on the Operations tab.

Well Completion Design: Operations (2)

Select an operation, then fill in the necessary settings.

Import Event Data (1)

Well completions and associated data are imported using the Well
event data (ASCII) (*.ev) format.

Match the well name on

file to a well in the
project.
Import Event Data (2)
A Completions folder is added to
the well folders.

Match the date format to the
