Rylee: Hi everyone, welcome to Unchained Living! Thank you so much for tuning in this
afternoon! My name is Rylee Osterberg and I will be your host for today’s episode titled:
Esoteric Energies. Today we will be discussing the traditional holistic wellness practice of reiki.
We will cover what it is, the benefits and risks, as well as common misconceptions. First off, I
would like to introduce our special guest, Sandy Ruminski! I first met Sandy after I signed up for
a Reiki 1 class through 9th street wellness center. I had tried reiki once or twice before, but
Sandy’s class taught me all about the history and basics of reiki. Welcome Sandy and thank you
so much for joining us today! Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
Sandy: *Introduction (Feel free to introduce yourself, tell us a little bit about how you found
yourself teaching reiki)*
Rylee: Thank you so much for taking the time to join us today and educate us more on reiki. I
also have with me today, my co-host Chase! Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Chase: *Introduction (feel free to tell us a little bit about yourself, if you have tried reiki before,
etc)*
Rylee: Thank you so much! Before we begin, I would like to take a moment where we go around
and say one good thing that happened to us today. Listeners, please feel free to also participate
by thinking about something good that has happened today. I will go first!
*Group discussion*
Rylee: I believe that taking time to recognize the good things in life is a way to maintain a
positive attitude and mindset, and is a great way to start our show off right! First off, Sandy
teaches reiki, but have any of the rest of you tried reiki or know anybody with personal
experience with energy therapy?
*Group discussion*
Rylee: Reiki.org defines reiki as, “a healing technique based on the principle that a therapist can
channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of
the patient's body and restore physical and emotional well-being.” Sandy, do you have anything
you would like to add to this definition based on your practice?
Sandy: *Please feel free to fill in by further defining what reiki is, any history behind it you feel
necessary*
Rylee: Holistic wellness is a form of healing that considers all parts of the body – the mind,
body, spirit, and emotions. Holistic health is all about maintaining balance in the body. If one
independent part is not working properly, all other parts will also be affected. Sandy, can you
please explain how you think reiki keeps the body in balance?
Sandy: *Feel free to elaborate on balance, energy, meridians, etc*
Rylee: Reiki was established in Japan, and can be traced to the traditional teachings of Mikao
Usui in the early 20th century. It has traditionally been passed down through time from master
to master through word of mouth and in-person lessons. When I was doing my research, the
word “attunement” kept popping up. This is something that I have personally experienced, as I
took Reiki 1 with you and you did my attunement! Sandy, could you please explain to the
listeners what that is?
Sandy: *Personal elaboration on what attunement is, possibly how people learn to practice
reiki*
Rylee: Now it’s time for fab facts! Did you know that over 800 hospitals in the U.S. have
incorporated reiki into patient therapy and has been used in operating rooms since the early
90’s? Many physicians, nurses, and support staff have been trained in reiki to promote healing
with patients of all kinds of ailments. Both of these facts come from Mayo Clinic.
*Group Discussion*
Rylee: Sandy, could you possibly give us an idea of what a typical reiki session looks like?
Sandy: *This can be as open as you want – I know not all reiki sessions are the same for
everyone*
Rylee: The International Association of Reiki professionals’ states that sensations of
peacefulness, contentment, tingling, temperature sensitivity and goose bumps are common for
a person to feel while experiencing reiki. For those that have done it, how does it feel to have
reiki done on you?
*Group discussion*
Rylee: Now it’s time for the myth busters segment! I am going to talk a little bit about two of
the most common misconceptions about reiki. First, reiki is not a religion! Although it is based
off spiritual beliefs, reiki is not based off of spiritual doctrine.
*Group discussion*
Rylee: Myth #2: Does giving reiki to others deplete your own energy? The answer is no! Reiki
practitioners serve more as a channel for energy and less as a source. Perhaps Sandy could
offer some more insight into this?
Sandy: *How do you feel after you complete a session of reiki? How does it feel after one
person versus a whole group such as a class?*
Rylee: And finally, Sandy, what has been your favorite thing about teaching and/or performing
reiki?
Sandy: *Fill in how you wish*
Rylee: To close the show, I just wanted to say thank you so much for joining me today! For
those who have listened and those that participated in conversation, I hope you have learned
something new today and consider trying out reiki if you are curious. Sandy, how might the
listeners reach you if they have any questions about reiki or are looking to set up a session with
you?
Sandy: *Please list any contact info!*
Rylee: Again, thank you all for joining me! If you are curious to learn more, much of the
information I talked about from this show can be found on iarp.org (International Association of
Reiki Professionals) and reiki.org. If you would like to continue this conversation, you chat with
me about reiki and other forms of holistic wellness practices on my blog,
esotericenergies.weebly.com. Happy Thursday, thanks for tuning in!
