Introduction

Through science, we are able to generated ideas that could change the way of life of us

people. Science is developed on research and developments from technological projects down to

scientific invention of life advances. Here, in the Philippines, the Department of Science and

Technology (DOST) has been the agency who manages and regulates the researches and

developments to science and technology. According to its information website, the agency’s

mission, and vision are as follows:

Mission

“DOST shall be the direction provider, leader and coordinator of the country's

scientific and technological efforts, ensuring that these are geared and utilized in

areas of maximum economic and social benefits for the people”. (Sec. 4, E.O. 128)

Vision

"A reservoir of scientific and technological know-how providing world-class

solutions that empower Filipinos to attain higher productivity and better quality of

life”.

Likewise, when it comes to disaster, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management

Council has been serving the Filipinos on disaster preparedness programs, disaster operations

and rehabilitation efforts undertaken by the Philippines government and the private sector.

NDRRMC acts as the top coordinator of all disaster management and the highest allocator of

resources in the country. The primary objective of the agency is:

Page | 1
Objective

“Ensure effective and efficient implementation of civil protection program through an

integrated, multi-sector and community based approach and strategies for the

protection and preservation of life, property and environment.”

With the presence of these two government agencies, the researchers seek to

revolutionize the responses when it comes to disaster with the help of advanced technology. In

line of DOST’s Projects, advances the use of cutting edge technologies and recommend

innovative information services in government’s disaster prevention and mitigation efforts to

help prevent these, the researchers admires to develop a product that could help Filipinos be

ready on disaster preparedness. Also, along with the government agencies, the researchers are

open for other partnerships and stakeholders who would reach a hand in helping us to realize this

project.

II. Purpose

On November 8, 2013, the City of Tacloban was badly hit by typhoon Yolanda

(internationally named, Haiyan) which led to cut down electricity, cell sites, and power outage

for many months and even a year or so. As one of the victims of such typhoon, it was really a

challenge for living without electricity in which for our generations nowadays, we are technically

dependent of such use for power sources which guarantees light, battery life for cellular phones

and gadgets, and even internet. We all use these things for contact and information and at those

Page | 2
times we were helpless, nothing to do but wait for news from people outside as the sun goes by

day by day. When the night falls, the moon is the main light with the support of flashlights.

As we notice, power technology in energy aspects, has been developing sustainably and

one of them is the solar energy. During those times, when electricity was still a myth amidst the

destruction, aside from generators, solar panels became a rampant market on side walk stores,

and other forms of stores at those times because aside from it is affordable, it very light handed

and very easy to use. Solar is a very efficient source of energy especially at that time because

with the suns’ heat, you can already absorb it with the use of panels and later on be converted as

an energy source and where, the sun is always there giving heat to whatever and wherever it

directs to and it gives renewable energy source to give light for household consumptions and

other establishments.

Along the solar panels, the power bank also came to arise from the market, as well as

convenient, portable and easy to use. It was a hit especially to us teenagers. It will save us from

falling in long lines to charging stations and avoid wasting time of waiting. With the use of such

device, there were already extra times, such as tuning in on a radio to know the whereabouts and

actions being done by our government for the rehabilitation of the city, while doing household

chores, which was really important because a lot of debris were stump upon on the community

after the typhoon.

With these, the researchers put on a purpose that these could be necessity when

calamities occur, which can also be economical for those who loves travelling from rural areas

doing some hiking, cycling, and camping. Thus the researchers, a group of Industrial

Page | 3
Engineering students in partnership with Electrical Engineering student have come up an idea of

a product that has all its features. The product is a solar power bank with a built-in radio and

flashlight. We believe that this idea has the need and could be a development on technology

when it comes to safety and security of the Filipino people.

All our expensive and portable devices are only as good as their battery life. All our

modern consumer devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and others gadgets are useless without

power and it defeats the object of their use if you have to keep on plugging them into the mains.

If you wish to remain mobile with your mobile device, the only solution in the foreseeable

future is a backup battery. This is particularly important in the case of mobile phones able to do

more or less what a PC can. Nowadays, it’s very essential that you have emergency kit that

contains flashlight, radio, medicine, clothes and other important things that’s needed for

emergency situations and calamities. Because of this we decided innovate an all in one gadget

and we called it Multi-Purpose Solar Power Bank. Through the help of Multi-Purpose Solar

Power Bank will store power and let you charge your other devices on the go, when needed.

Multi-Purpose Solar Power Bank works the same way, just instead of electricity it uses the sun

(through the built-in solar panels) to charge itself. This product has flashlight and radio that are

needed for emergency situations and calamities.

III. Product Description

The device is purely generated by solar energy and thus it can grasp power anywhere and

anytime as long as it is daylight. The product is from main compartments of a power bank, solar

Page | 4
panel, flashlight, and radio, ergonomically designed to be convenient, portable, and easy to use

type of product. Also, the product produces energy that could last for two-three weeks of stored

energy. We want to raise this product to give awareness to the people of Tacloban City or the

whole nation for safety and precautions to abide when calamities will arise. Our targets are those

underprivileged families living on rural areas commonly on coastal premises or near the bodies

of water.

A. Objectives

The researchers’ objectives to reach in order to fulfill the purpose of the study:

1. To help these people provide a product that is compact and can be used even

without electricity or batteries, as a response for emergencies.

2. A product that could help families and communities to ready whenever fortuitous

event/s will come arise to the city and/or in the country.

3. And a device that could assist people to sustain light and power whenever there in

their hike, camping, or in rescue.

C. Action Plan

The researchers’ primary concern is the safety of communities when it comes to

disaster. As a pre-operation plan, the researchers stimulated an action plan to test the

product feasibility, viability, and desirability. Our action plan is:

1. Give free sample trial of the device to local community living near and along the

coastal barangays of Tacloban City with the help of the barangay officials and

Page | 12
hopefully by some organization also. The target quantity is around 500 devices for

500 households.

2. The researchers will educate the respondents on how to use the device properly. The

device is only a free trial; therefore it is only for a limited time, for research purposes.

3. A survey is conducted upon the satisfaction rate and the product adoption process of

the respondents.

4. Through positive response and comments of the said product are improved by an

on-going development process.

5. We can introduce the product into the market for commercialization in partnership

with the DOST and NDRRMC.

D. Marketing Mix

1. Product

Multi-Propose Solar Power Bank the use of the product is to ensure the needs of

the user in an emergency situation.

2. Price

The product is not after on a high profit but as long as we can overcome all the

expenses help and satisfied the needs and wants of the customer.

3. Promotion

The target markets of Multi-Purpose Solar Power Bank are the teenagers,

travellers, and even adults. To introduce this product to the market world; First, we

will give samples then display it on crowded place where people will be the able to

see the clearer view of the product.
