RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY

BAQUIRAN, Elisha
MADAYAG, Tomas
There are many different facts found in Rituparna Devi’s article. According to the article
of Rituparna Devi, students, especially in higher education, now spend most of their time with
college friends and outside of home for various purposes and work. Hence, in the current
scenario, the best place to include recreational activities in one’s life is one’s place of education
rather than at home. This not only provides a chance to include recreations in one’s life, but also
helps students to socialize and become less dependent on one’s parents. Meaning, doing home
works or projects outside your usual environment such as your house is considered a recreational
activity. It helps in building communication skills and team building as students have to work in
groups to solve problems. There will be more discussions of ideas and feedbacks and helps
students to resolve conflict among them. It also helps in boosting memory as there is more
practical experience and the information can be soaked up wholly by the brain in a more fresh
and fascinating environment. It also helps in moral development as students get the opportunity
to undertake leadership, question actions and regulations and accept responsibility for their own
behavior. Enhances peer relationships and interpersonal skills. Students can also excel in areas
other than academics where they have an interest. Recreational activities can give a chance to
discover talents other than academic excellence which can later help one in the career and life as
a whole. Recreational activity consists of activities or experiences carried on within leisure,
usually chosen voluntarily by the participant – either because of satisfaction, pleasure or creative
enrichment derived, or because he perceives certain personal or social values to be gained from
them. It may, also be perceived as the process of participation, or as the emotional state derived
from involvement. Recreational activities help in overall development of a student’s physically,
mentally, and emotionally. It not only helps to gather knowledge but to use it ethically to lead a
healthy and better life. It teaches one to think with reason and live with a more practical
approach to life. It also enhances ones all round development, thus helping to achieve success in
ones endeavors.
There are several opinions from Devi’s article and one is that students are more
enthusiastic to learn in outdoor learning activities as compared to traditional indoor setting and
also more motivated. They also develop a better attitude towards the environment and more
responsible behavior. It is an opinion because not everyone agrees to what she has said. Not
everybody considers studying or learning outdoor as a greater option when studying. Personally,
we do not agree to learning or studying outdoors, instead we prefer studying inside our houses or
rooms, because not only does it give you the peaceful environment, it will also help you focus
more on what you are studying. Another opinion is that the present way of life where people
mostly stay in families with parents working, the viability of our own home as a place where we
can have recreational time has diminished. Meaning, having nobody at home decreases the
chance of recreational activity when doing activities at home. It is again an opinion because not
everybody agrees that having people at home while you try to do recreational activities is better
than doing these activities alone. We think that doing recreational activities alone at home is a
better environment to enhance the mental and physical health, and could help improve the
quality of life.
The purpose of the author in creating this article is to inform the people into why it is
important to participate or be involved in recreational activities. The author aims to feed the
people enough information on the benefits of recreational activities. Rituparna Devi included in
her article the benefits of being involved in recreational activities which are for mental health,
physical health, and to improve the quality of one’s life. Because of her article, we are now more
into participating to more recreational activities such as dancing, playing the piano, and playing
with our friends.

As students, we think that doing recreational activities can impact us greatly by helping
our minds become stable. Many students give up because of the stress they receive from school
and we have experienced it too. There are times we wanted to stop going to school but because
we participated in recreational activities of the school, it has helped us refresh our minds and
become positive thinkers.
