Eccentricity of prestress force: Example 4.7.a

A post-tensioned prestressed concrete beam is to carry a live load of

1000 plf and superimposed dead load of 500plf, in addition to its own
weight, on a 40ft simple span. Normal density concrete will be used
with fc’ = 6000psi. It is estimated that, at the time of transfer, the
concrete will have attained 70% of its ultimate strength or 4200psi.
Time dependent lossed may be assumed 15% of initial prestress,
giving an effectiveness ratio of 0.85. Determine the required concrete
dimensions, magnitude of prestress force, and the eccentricity of the
steel centroid based on allowable stress limits.

WITH CONSTANT ECCENTRICITY TENDONS METHOD
Example 4.7.b Example 4.7.c

Redesign the beam in example 4.7a with constant eccentricity. Dead A post-tensioned beam is to be designed to carry a uniformly
load estimate will be increased to 270 plf. The resulting moment Mo distributed load over a 30 ft span. In addition to its own weight, it
is 54 kips-ft. The moment due to superimposed dead load and live must carry a dead load of 150 plf and a service live load of 600plf. Fc’
load is 300 kips-ft. = 4000psi will be attained at 28 days; at a time of transfer of prestress
force, the strength will be 3000psi. Prestress loss may be assumed at
20% of Pi. On the basis that about one quarter of live load will be
sustained over a substantial time period, kb of 0.25 will be used in
determining the balanced load.
