Title of Lesson: Factors of Motion

Lesson Summary: Today we are starting a new unit on Motion. To start class, I am going to
explain our learning objectives for the unit and what I am wanting them to learn over the next
couple of weeks. Then we are going to get into some guided notes over the factors of motion:
speed, velocity, acceleration and displacement. With these guided notes I am going to explain
that I want them to keep them in classroom over the next couple of weeks as we will have three
days of notes during this unit. After we get done with the notes for the day, we will start our
activity. We are doing an activity where they will be creating a distance/time graph. They are
going to use data that is already in a table to create this. Once they have the table completed, they
will answer questions based off of this data.

Grade Level: 7th

Subject: Science
Length of Time: 1 Hour

District, State, National Standards Covered:

6.PS.4: An object’s motion can be described by its speed and the direction in which it is moving.

8.PS.2: Forces can act to change the motion of objects.

Lesson Objectives: I can find the speed of an object.

-I can answer question using the speed formula
-I can describe how a distance/time graph would look.

Materials Needed:
-Paper
-Colored Pencils
-Pencil
Procedures:
Lesson Opening: I will start the lesson by describing our learning targets for the unit and
what I am wanting them to learn over the next couple of weeks.
Body of Lesson (Modeling): Through the first 20 minutes of the lesson we will be doing
some guided notes, where they will have to follow along with me. We will be describing the
factors of motion and how to find those factors.
Guided Practice: Throughout the notes, there are examples that I am going to have them
do on their own. Once they are done we will go over the example on the board together.

Independent Practice: For this part of the lesson is when start working on the activity for
the day. I will have them look at a table to create a distance time graph. I want them to see how
the change of speed would look on a graph. Once they complete the graph there will be questions
to follow.

Closing: To end the day, I hope that they have the graph completed so that they can finish
the questions tomorrow. I will review what we have talked about for today and where we are
headed for the rest of the week.

Assessment and Evaluation: I will assess the students by having them turn this is as a grade. I am
more concerned with how they answered the questions as this will show that they are reading the
date correctly.

Differentiation: For the IEP studnets I have a teacher that comes in to make sure that during the
activities they are staying on track, but during the modeling I will make sure that I am not
moving on until everyone is ready to move on. For the gifted students I am going to walk around
the classroom and challenge some of them on the questions.
