Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Balance It Out

Objectives:

• Students will be able to balance and have stability while standing in a variety of
poses/positions without support.
• Students will be able to balance and have stability doing a variety of poses that require
good balance with 2-3 other students at a time.

State Standards:

• K-4.3 Work independently and with others on physical education tasks.

• K-4.4 Participate appropriately as a member of the class by following directions and
classroom rules and using safe physical-activity practices.

Context:

This lesson is designed to improve students balance and team building skills. They will have to
use their own strength and ability to work together to complete their given tasks and enjoy being
physically active.

Data:

Students will be grouped based on the exit tickets they received from the previous lesson at the
class before. These will be handed out based on the amount of activities they were able to
complete with good and steady balance. Students will be grouped on pace of their ability rather
than their level of ability. By doing this, students will be moving at the same rate of pace within
their groups. This would most likely be the lesson before a final assessment of balance, therefore
there would be no need for data of future groupings, however, the pictures that they took of their
poses and my documentation during the teacher directed station, I will have data on the students.

Materials:

• Tablets
o BalanceIt app
o Link to Balance on One Foot Action Song
o Camera
• Timer on my watch

Procedures:

Introduction: 15 minutes
When students enter the class, they will sit in their assigned lines and we will do our daily
warmup exercises together that are performed at the start of every class. If necessary, students
will be given time to change in to their gym clothes prior to sitting in their assigned lines as well.
Once we have warmed up, I will explain the lesson for the day. I will explain what will happen at
each station by taking the class to each station and explaining it there. At each station will be
their materials that they need as well as pictures depicting what will be done there in case the
students forget. We will return to our assigned lines and I will divide the students into their three
groups. Once the students arrive at each station, I will start the 10-minute timer so each lesson
can begin.
Teacher Directed: 10 minutes
Here is where we will watch the link to the Balance on One Foot Action Song and follow along
to the dance together. The video is about 2 minutes and 30 seconds long. After this we will hold
multiple competitions of who can balance in different positions while I time the students to see
who can balance for the longest.
Collaborative: 10 minutes
This group will use the BalanceIt app to follow along with the three person balance poses. Each
group within this group will have one tablet to share. They will be able to practice a variety of
positions and create their own ways to balance. To know that they have accomplished a pose,
they will set up the timed camera and take a picture of them balancing. This will allow them to
work together and practice their skills collaboratively.
Independent Digital: 10 minutes
At the independent station, students will again use the BalanceIt app except at this station they
are only working on the balance poses for one person at a time. They will each have their own
tablet to use here. Similar to the collaborative lesson, the students must use the self-timer on the
camera to capture a picture of their favorite poses. This will allow me to know how much they
are challenging themselves, what they like best, and their level of ability.
Closure: 5 minutes
After each student has been to every station, all students will return to their assigned lines and I
will give small candy prizes to the students who won the balance challenges in the teacher
directed station. If there is enough time, I will allow a few groups of students to show their
favorite balancing poses. Then, once their homeroom teacher arrives, they will line up at the door
and return to their classroom.
Rationale:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thepegeek.balanceit&hl=en_US This app
allows students to work individually and collaboratively which are the two state standards I
chose to focus on with this lesson. It allows students to challenge themselves and learn based on
pictures, videos, and tips written in the app. This will help all types of learners and even ESL
students who can learn solely off of the pictures or choose to enhance their English skills by
looking at the readings as well. This app is engaging for students to work at their own pace,
motivating for students to see challenges right in front of them on screen, easy to follow, and
application based. While this app doesn’t track their results or ability for me as a teacher, the
pictures they take will do this task.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM5875xGZcs I chose this song because it is fairly short,

the words are easy to follow and remember, and it is useful for all types of learners. It allows
students to practice balancing on their own while also practicing and singing collaboratively
which compliments both of the state standards that I chose to focus on in this lesson. The music
video has lots of bright colors and is very memorable. It is upbeat and fun for a kindergarten
class. Because the link is on YouTube, it is easily accessible for students to use at home or
anywhere that they can access the internet. All students will be able to benefit from this video.
