Chapter - 5:

DESIGN PROCESS

1
Introduction:

This chapter deals with the thoughtful translation of concept into architectural vocabulary for the
identified program. Generally, in a sports complex, sports activities are segregated or are far apart
from one another with limited visual and physical access. Due to such design strategy, players who
come to play sports only visit their respective sport court, not fully enjoying the sports complex in its
true essence. A sports complex should be designed in such a way that it provides users an
opportunity to experience different sports activities simultaneously, be it visually or physically. The
impact of one whole sports complex this way will be greater than that of a complex with isolated
blocks. The building programs are to be designed and placed in such a way that the different
programs are interlinked with each other.

When I speak of transition spaces, I mean how these in between spaces will aid the sports activities
by bringing the users from different zones together, and giving them an opportunity to interact with
each other

Design Process:

Generation of Grid:

The design process started with the formation of a grid. Three types of grid were used:

1: North South Grid:

This grid was utilized as North or 15 degrees east of North is the best orientation for outdoor sports.

2: Grid of the context:

This grid was used to create a link with the urban context.

3: Nodes:

The third and last type of grid was made from the nodes in the context to give an idea about the
access.

Zoning on Site:

Considering the introvert nature of females, the basic zoning was done by placing the functions are
the periphery of the site, so that the building is covered from the sides but opens up from the inside,
providing a sense of “owness” and “security” to the females.

After fulfilling the requirements of each program and placing the volumes on site, the negative or in-
between spaces popped up. These spaces have been utilized to provide informal training and
communal interaction.
