THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING A RESTORATION PROJECT ​1

Abstract
Planning a restoration project prior to starting it is essential in having a successful outcome.

Restoration projects can always have a beautiful outcome, especially with the fact that it looks

the way one will want it. This can also be far better then buying something brand new, as it will

save a person money. Though it may be easy and fun to do a restoration project, it can become

far more difficult if it is not planned. Not planning a project can leave excessive room for

mistakes and problems to become apparent. Next, when planning a restoration project it is

important to think ahead what type of furniture will be restored along with the desired finished

look. It is important to know that most restoration projects are solid wood, as these tend to be

easier to restore.It is important to answer questions such as will it be painted, will it be stained,

will it be distressed? It is also important to know before starting to stain or paint, that the product

needs to be sanded with a rougher grit to get any prior stain off and anything else undesirable on

there. Following that the project will need to be sanded with a smoother grit to make the stain or

paint take easier. It will then need to be cleaned with a smooth cloth to clean off any dirt or wood

shavings,otherwise it will mix with the paint or stain and will result in an unwanted look or

without a smooth surface. Staining the product will revive the wood look to the product, thus one

will want to research different stains as they will bring out different looks. Painting the product

will also revive the product but will also cover the wood look and has to be used to distress the

product. One will want to research different paints as well as they will give different results.

Overall, restoring a piece of furniture can take time but it can really save a piece of furniture as

opposed to disposing of it. Since it will no longer be disposed of one will not have to buy a new

piece of furniture, thus saving one money. Henceforth making a plan, saving money and having

fun are three easy steps to an enjoyable new hobby.
