Standard/Goal/Objectives: 
SOLs covered in this lesson:  
4.2 The student will make and listen to oral presentations and reports.  
4.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts, narrative nonfiction 
texts, and poetry.  
4.7 The student will write cohesively for a variety of purposes.  
4.8 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, spelling, punctuation, 
sentence structure, and paragraphing.  
 
Learning Targets: 
Today I will…. read the writing portrait poem examples 
So that I can… learn and understand how to write my own portrait poem 
I know I have it when… I can create my own portrait poem using the directions given to me.

● What is a portrait poem? 
● What did I learn from my classmates that presented?  
● How will I choose what I write about? 
● How will I use the text provided to mentor my writing?  
● What kind of descriptive words will I use in my poem to get my point across? 
● What kind of editing will I need to make my poem the best it can be?

- Promethean board and laptop to display the example portrait poem  
- Markers, Crayons, and colored pencils 
- Student Laptops for them to brainstorm ideas for each line of their poem and to 
write their final poem on 

Activities: 
1) Students will read the poem along with the teacher presented on the board.  
2) Students will participate in a class discussion about the vocabulary presented in the 
poem.  
3) Students will listen to instructions on how to complete their poems.  
4) Students will brainstorm ideas to end the sentences in the poems that are geared 
towards themselves.  
5) Students will complete their own portrait poem and may add pictures. 
6) If time permits: students will present their poem to the class.
