Lesson Plan

Introduction

This is a reading and writing lesson plan prepared by me to meet the theoretical to

practical requirements of E528 Professional ESL Teaching-Theory to Practice. According to the

lesson plan, 50 minutes of classroom teaching was conducted. The purpose of this course plan is

to help me establish a connection between second language theory and practice.

Brief description of classroom setting:

The topic of the class is an event in Fort Collins---the Spring Artisan Market. It was held from

4:00 to 4:50 in Eddy Hall with English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Furthermore, there

are 8-12 ESL students who want to develop their English reading and writing skills and language

abilities. These ESL students speak various L1s, such as Chinese, Spanish, Italian, etc. I believe

the target level of this class is Novice-High to Intermediate-Low level.

Pre-lesson inventory

Goal:

➢ To help students improve their reading ability by practicing reading for detail.

➢ To help students learn through the content of the event---Spring Artisan

Market.

➢ To help students gain confidence to actively participate in activities by

discussing with partners and playing a debate game.

Content objectives:

2
➢ Students will be able to understand the meaning and use of the new words that

they learned in class, such as artisan, jewelers, crafter, etc.

➢ Students will be able to interpret information in an authentic paragraph or text

to answer a question.

Language objectives:

➢ Students will be able to organize and write simple sentences correctly, for

example, “I will go to the spring artisan market because…”

➢ Students will be able to understand the new vocabulary items in the short

article about the spring artisan market.

Materials to take to class: PowerPoint Presentation, handouts, and 18 copies of the exercise.

Equipment needed for class: laptop, projector, screen, white board

Assignments to collect from students: NONE

Special room arrangements: NONE

Warm up: Introduce an event in Fort Collins---the Spring Artisan Market (_5_ minutes)

Purpose: By introducing this event, students can learn some information about this event. Also,

it can attract students’ attention.

Procedures: Before I introduce the event, I will have a short communication with students. For

example, “Do you know about the artisan market?” and “What do you know about artisan

markets?” Then, I will introduce some information about Spring Artisan Market like the date,

address and ticket prices and where to get tickets. Certainly, when I introduce the address, I will

show the picture of map that let students know exactly how to get to this place.

3
Transition: “Good! Some students have been to the artisan market. Would you like to know

more about this event?”

Activity 1: Read article (_10_ minutes)

Purpose: Let the students read the article aloud and actively in a group. Let students preview

new vocabulary.

Procedures: Before the students read the news article, I will introduce some new words by

describing the event and attach relevant pictures to help students understand the meaning of the

words. When the students are learning the new words, I will give them two to three minutes to

read the article individually or with their partners. Then, I'll invite four volunteers to read a

paragraph of the four paragraphs.

Transition: “Everybody did a good job! We understand the general content and main

information of the event. Let me give some exercises to see if everyone has mastered these new

words and information.”

Activity 2: Do exercise (_12_ minutes)

Purpose: Students will complete an exercise by understanding the meaning of the words and the

contents of the article. Additionally, they can select the correct answers.

Procedures: This exercise is divided into two parts: multiple choice and true/false. I will give

the students six minutes to finish the exercises by themselves and then check their answers with

the team members. When they're done, I'll tell them the correct answers. If there are any

questions, I will help them.

4
Transition: Good!! You guys all understand the content very well. Since you all know the

content of this activity, let's say whether you will attend the event.

Activity 3: Create sentence (_10_minutes)

Purpose: Let students apply structure “I will go to the spring artisan market because……” “I

will not go the spring market because……” to create a sentence. This activity will help students

to work on their writing skills.

Procedures: I will divide all the students into two groups, one group for girls and one for boys.

The girls' group will write reasons why they will go to the spring artisan market, and the boys'

group will write the reasons why they don’t want to go to the spring artisan market. Everyone in

the group should write one reason.

Transition: Ok!! Both boys’ group and girls’ group have written your own reasons. Let's have a

debate and see who has the better reason.

Activity 4: Debate (_8_minutes)

Purpose: Let students interact with other students through group activities. This activity may

help students to improve their speaking ability.

Procedures: Have each student in the girls' group and each student in the boys’ group introduce

their reasons and have them debate. I will write down the students' reasons on the whiteboard to

see who has the better reasons. After the debate, students will receive snacks as a reward.

5
Closure (_5_ minutes)

Purpose: To ask some questions to let student reflect on today’s class, and let them share their

ideas. Then, I will also let students summarize what we've learned today and introduce the

information of next class including the topic, time, etc.

Spring Artisan Market

Artisan marketplaces are starting to spring up around the country. The concept brings local
vendors, craftsmen and boutique businesses into open, loft-like spaces and often include farm-
to-table food operations in the mix. Not only do these marketplaces provide a more intimate and
specialized shopping experience such as Seattle’s Melrose Market (pictured above) but they also
function as informal social gatherings where shoppers can meet and interact with local
craftsmen, artists and designers from their community.

Artisans of all kinds, including jewelers, woodworkers, and photographers, will showcase their
wares on April 14 for the annual Spring Artisan Market at the Fort Collins Senior Center (1200
Raintree Drive). The Spring Artisan Fair takes place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and is free and open to
the public.

Spring is here and with it comes shopping for Mother’s Day, preparing garden beds, and getting
your home ready to host friends. The Senior Center welcomes artisans from around the country
with their handcrafted goods for sale to help you get ready for spring with something fresh and
new.

Additional artisans that will be represented at the Fair include Birds of a Feather Birdhouses,
Rebel Popcorn, and Dawn until Dusk, a crafter that uses goats’ milk to make soaps and lotions.
Jewelers, needle workers, photographers, sculptures, bakers, and others will make up the more
than 40 artisan vendors at the Fair. Artists will have their works available for sale.
