Mock Congress Research Paper

If you consume high amounts of energy, but don't burn off the energy, much of the surplus
energy will be stored by the body as fat. With accumulation, you will soon get obesity. In recent
decades, the prevalence of obesity has increased dramatically in the United States, tripling
among children and doubling among adults. Nowadays, many people are not very concerned
about the problem of obesity. But in fact, most obese people have a lot of health problems. They
may also suffer from social stigma and discrimination, as well as psychological problems. So
obesity poses a major public health challenge. We should set up a bill to focus on obese people.
Thus attracting the attention of the public, reducing the number of obese people, help them and
reducing the number of obese people to make the social population healthier.
People's lack of attention to obesity has led to a large increase in the number of obese people.
They may ignore their physical condition because of work or academic busyness, and rarely
exercise, resulting in fat accumulation. Nearly two out of every three Americans are overweight
or obese(Dr. Richard Carmona July 16, 2003). Because Americans pay too little attention to
obesity. It has caused a large number of Americans to have obesity problems. The prevalence of
obesity was 39.8% and affected about 93.3 million US adults in 2015~2016 ( CDC National
Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) data brief ). This evidence clearly illustrates the common
and serious nature of obesity in today's society. We need to control obesity, so I think the social
supervision department should set rules for restaurants in the market to ensure the quality of
food, provide a healthier diet, and it is necessary to provide special meals for obese people,
control their proper amount, and balanced nutrition. The same serious problem, the child's
obesity rate also needs to be resolved.
Children's obesity needs to be solved more than adult obesity. They don't have such strong
immunity and control. They lack a concept for obesity. The latest data survey show that the
national obesity rate among youth ages 2 to 19 is 18.5%. The rate varies among different age
groups, with rates rising along with age (The National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey). The data shows that children's obesity will increase with age, and if left unchecked,
things will become serious. Prevention of future chronic disease in children and adults may
depend on our ability to prevent the onset of obesity in young children (LSU Health Sciences
Center, New Orleans, USA January 2005). It can be seen that preventing obesity in children is
also an important point to solve other diseases. Increasing the school's physical education
curriculum and arousing children's sports interest is a good solution. So what kind of harm does
obesity bring us?
We need to improve medical equipment to control obesity. Medical care about obesity is not
very popular compared to other diseases. Even if people realize that obesity is not necessarily
solved. Each year obesity-related conditions cost over 150 billion dollars and cause an estimated
300,000 premature deaths in the US (Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare). Obesity is waiting to
be solved, we should vigorously swell fat treatment. Obesity is a serious medical condition that
can cause complications such as metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart
disease, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, cancers and sleep disorders (U.S. Department of Health
& Human Services). Studies have shown that many diseases are actually caused by obesity, then
we strengthen the problem of obesity, and other diseases will decline. Therefore, the government
needs to supervise the drug sector to research better obesity drugs and ask hospitals to improve
medical equipment. When adopting these strategies, it also brings some new problems.
Some people think that letting restaurants control the food intake of obese people, changing
their consistent diet can lead to obesity cannot adapt, and even suffer from anorexia. Schools also
take a bigger risk because it organizes more exercise and children may get hurt. Reduce the
amount of sugar, refined grains, and highly processed foods while focusing on eating large
amounts of vegetables and whole foods - don't worry about calculating calories or limiting the
amount - lose a lot of weight in a year ( JAMA Network February 20, 2018). So we can improve
obesity through a healthy diet without reducing too much food or even reducing it. Gorman does
note that the Institute of Medicine recommendations for more physical activity opportunities
during the school day is a good move and might help offset the amount of junk food all kids
seem to eat regardless of activity level (ABC News By LIZ NEPORENT May 23, 2013).
Schools don't necessarily need to organize sports that are too difficult. A simple exercise can be
done. Schools can also add professional instructors to ensure the efficiency and safety of student
movements. It is necessary to solve people's obesity from the diet, and the school is also an
important place to control the child's obesity.
According to my above point of view, formulating laws to control the three directions of
obesity are set food rules for restaurants in the market, start prevention from childhood obesity
and increase medical equipment. This is not just a simple obesity problem, it is also a social
health problem. I believe that solving this problem also means improving the health of the whole
society. Let us join this “Control Obesity Act” to achieve a healthier social environment.
