JACK ARCH

ROOF:
Introduction To Jack Arch:
A jack arch is a structural element in masonry
construction that provides support at openings in the
masonry.
Alternate names are ‘flat arch’ and ‘straight arch’.
Unlike regular arches, jack arches are not semicircular
in form. Instead, they are flat in profile and are used
under the same circumstances as lintels.
This name has also been used to describe another
roofing system that involves a series of smaller sized,
yet elongated vaults that are supported on intermediate
beams.
INTRODUCTION TO JACK
ARCH ROOF
This is termed as a jack arch slab roof type,
and the series of vaults are usually filled on
the upper surface with cement concrete to
provide a plane surface above, that can
serve as a floor to another level, a terrace or
the protective covering for the building.
This particular approach can be very cost
effective and applicable to a wide range of
requirements.
Again to create this kind of roof innovations
such as the use of hollow blocks and
precast beams can be utilized.
The arch is supported on the lower flange of mild steel
joists (RSJs).
The rolled steel joists are supported at their ends on the
walls or on the longitudinal girders.
They are spaced at a distance of 1m to 1.5m centre to
centre.
The rise of the arch is kept equal to 1/12th of the span.
Layer of concrete is then poured over the roof to
straighten the roof.
The concrete layer thickness over the crown of the arch
is not less than 15cm.
Due to the super-imposed load on the arch, tension
develops at the ends of the arch.
Steel tie rods are placed at the ends of an arch with a
suitable spacing of 1.8m to 2.4m.

Materials:

This type of roof maybe built with

materials such as brick, steel, concrete
and clay-gypsum mortar.
The roofing technique which can be seen
in auroville is that of ' Jack Arch roof with
Terra-cotta hollow blocks and Precast
reinforced concrete beams'

Jack arch roof construction where trapezoidal
reinforced concrete beams are used at intervals
between which hollow terra cotta blocks form small
elongated multiple vaults.
Above them concrete fill is laid providing a level
surface upon which the flooring finish can be done.
If there is another level in the structure. Otherwise the
top of the building can be waterproofed and any
relevant terrace surface material such as china
mosaic tiling used for the finished roof.

Step three:After the drying of cement mortar,
waterproofing is done to avoid any kind of further leakage.
Waterproofing material is mixed in a drum of water and
splashed over the cement mortar layer. We must make
sure that every corner of the roof is to be covered with this
waterproofing material.
Step four:After the process of waterproofing, tiling is done
with the help of a suitable adhesive.

PROCESS OF FIXING:

SURFACE PREPARATION AND APPLICATION

The surface must be free from dust, oil,
grease, loose particles, etc.Moisten the surface
before applying Dr. Fixit Crack-X Shrinkfree.
Fine hairline cracks must be widened up to a
minimum of 1 mm and then be filled.
For filling, Dr. Fixit Crack-X Shrinkfree on
the internal surfaces, remove the existing POP
or painter’s putty till the plaster surface is
exposed.
Press Dr. Fixit Crack-X Shrinkfree firmly into the crack only one time, with a
spatula or putty knife and level the surface. If convenient, use
handball application.
Take care to avoid formation of cavities or bubbles during application.
Allow it to dry in ambient conditions for 5 to 6 hours before painting for best
results.
A 7-day air curing is advised.Further, apply POP or painters’ putty once it is fully
dry.

CLEANING:
Clean tools and equipments by soap and water.Wash hands with soap and warm
water.
