Online Casebook

My online casebook will help me prove my research proposal. I wish to find out which cigarette

is more harmful to the human body. I believe that vaping and the use of e-cigarettes or become

more harmful than a traditional cigarette. As new trends begin, old ones soon to fade out, but

new trends are not always positive trends. The research I have obtained will help me suport my

research proposal.

1. Rimer, Sara, et al. “Behind TheVapor.” Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) | Human

Resources, BU Research, www.bu.edu/research/articles/behind-the-vapor/.

In this source, “Behind The Vapor” by Sara Rimer, the vaping industry is put on

the hot seat about how safe vaping actually is. Over the past decade, e-cigarettes

has grown into a 3 billion dollar industry. With over four hundred and sixty-six

brands and seven thousand, seven hundred and sixty- four flavors, it is not hard to

find a brand and flavor you like to keep your mind hooked on nicotine or to be

curious enough to try it.

The article talks about how e-cigarettes are safer than regular cigarettes

because of the substances contained in them but does that mean that they are still

safe? The answer is no. According to a study in 2013, more than a quarter million
Slyby 2

of the youth has tried a vape product that contains nicotine. Going into more

statistics only four to seven percent of smokers actually quit without turning to an

alternative method. E-cigarettes are becoming a trend and before we know it, lung

cancer will be the newest trend for generation Z. This website was made for the

blind eye. The audience that this is intended for young teens who are seeking

answers about how bad vaping really is. The first picture that is shown on the

website grabs the attention of a young adults eye. What makes this article

different from others is the format. It bolds certain things that you usually would

not think of. It compares vaping from the past decade to the recent decade, to

show the severity.

This article will be my number one research article in my analysis of ecigs

vs. cigarettes.

2. Zuckerman, Dr. “Is Vaping Safer than Smoking Cigarettes?” National Center for Health

Research, 8 Oct. 2018, www.center4research.org/vaping-safer-smoking-cigarettes-2/.

The National Center for Health Research points out how e-cigarettes are making a

turn for the worse when it comes to people’s health. Four successful health

professionals came together to truly identify what is worse for the human body, E-

cigarettes or Cigarettes. Defining what e-cigs are, comparing them to traditional

cigarettes, and giving statistics about them, this article goes in depth on all

mentioned. Although multiple studies have not been performed because of the

recent rise in an alternative way to smoke, a sufficient amount of data has came

out calling out the negatives. The FDA has a requirement for e-cigarettes that you
Slyby 3

have to be able to prove it is safer. E-cigarettes does not contain nicotine like a

traditional cigarettes does. Instead, e-cigarettes contain many toxic chemicals that

can also cause cancer. For example, in a performed study, 42 liquid cartridges

contained formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a toxic chemical that is used for

household products and preserving dead bodies. There has also been traces of

antifreeze in certain vape product brands. These toxic chemicals being exposed to

the human body can cause long lasting inflammation, which can turn into more

severe things. All the same harmful concerns about traditional cigarettes. Vaping

studies have shown that it could damage a humans body DNA. After a fifteen

minute vaping session for five humans, the saliva in each human had traces of

formaldehyde and acrolein. Acrolein is known to damage DNA which invited

cancer cells to take over the body. Vaping has not been just an alternative method

to smoking, but also a new trend throughout high schoolers and middle schoolers.

In 2015, almost three million students in the United States has tried some type of

tobacco product. Imagine the number currently. If history repeats itself like a

usual trend, it is up to six million currently.

The writers that took time to make this article was to inform people the

hard facts with logical statistics backing them up. After being told how bad

juuling, vaping, and many more alternatives to cigarettes are, the brain starts to

wonder if it should believe what it is being told. When a young citizen looks up

“is vaping worse than cigarettes”, it will catch many young adults attention. I

think the audience is intended for younger adults and high schoolers. The article

mention the effects to the body and brain that it can do to anybody but specifically
Slyby 4

to a younger person's body. I also think it is directed to young adults or middle

aged adults that are wanting to have kids. Knowing that vaping can damage DNA

will out a lot of shock through many people’s mind who are wanting kids. When a

person is informed on what could possibly affect their own body, the mind

changes its opinion on certain things.

I will highlight this as a key part in my article when I talk about the effects

that it has on a younger body. I will also mention it when it comes to the crowd

appeal that the big tobacco brands would target. This article has many key

sections that can be further explained in a research paper.

3. Stratton , Kathleen. Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes. National Academies

Press, 2018. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29894118

In the book, Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes, this book is devoted to

looking at every possible concern, effect, and exposure nicotine has to our body

and the way it is modeled to the world. In this informative book, there are three

sections that evenly explain the use of e-cigarettes. Section 1 is about the different

devices and uses that e-cigarettes have to offer. This section also talks about why

and how nicotine becomes addictive. In recent studies, they are showing that

“more nicotine is being filtered into bigger vapes these big companies are

producing”. In the second section, the main focus is how e-cigarettes is affecting

human health. It informs the reader about the general cancers and diseases that
Slyby 5

they can cause but also how the body becomes dependant on the substance being

put into their bodies. People who use tobacco products are more likely to become

dependant on more than a single substance. Nicotine is fast acting and is required

a “bolus form which causes a faster addiction. In the third and final section the

way big companies portray e-cigarettes and what audiences they are really

striving for. A topic that is brought up is e-cigarette usage in young adults. E-

cigarettes are promoted to be an alternative to smoking but for first time smokers,

they also look very appealing. Lately, it has been a cessation through young adults

who are oblivious about the harmful effects to the body.

The writer’s purpose and the audience of this book is for other people

seeking answers about vaping and all that entails with it. The information in this

book is wide range and many people could use it as ethos, pathos, and logos in

shorter articles. In my research paper, I plan to use the three sections as an

emotional appeal and physical appeal. The way that the book is formatted will

help my paper be organized and will allow me to clearly get my point across.

5. Jeffrey BuckleyI. That period has led me to vaping. “Side Effects of Vaping: New

Studies and Researches Explained.” Vaping Daily, 2018,

millardwestcatalyst.com/6023/news/vaping-a-dangerous-epidemic/.

In the High School News Article from Millard West High School, published by

Edison Geiler, the epidemic of e-cigarettes is explained in a real life situation. In

this article, Edison Geiler the severity of juuls in the younger population is higher

than ever before. As of Last Year, 15 million kids were enrolled into public

schools. Out of those students, 1.7 million of them vape daily. Since then, the

vaping epidemic has became much worse. In the 21st century, traditional

cigarettes have never been appealing to the youth. This article brings the high

school students opinion to life. In a survery throughout the school, 13.7% thought

that nicotine was the only substance in the vaping and 66% thought that there was

only flavoring installed in the vapes. This survey among high school students

shows the lack of knowledge that the youth obtains about e-cigs and that is a huge

concern. Just like any trend in high school, many high school students thought

that this would be cool for about 2 weeks, but soon realized that this was much

bigger than a “cool” trend. Juuls is the e-cigarette that started the epidemic

throughout young students. What the users did not know was that one juul pod

equals about 200 puffs. 200 puffs out of one juul pod is equal to one pack of

traditional cigarettes. Because nicotine and other toxic chemicals are shadowed by
Slyby 7

good flavors, young adults do not understand how much toxins they are putting

into their bodies.

The writer’s purpose for this article is to inform high schoolers about what

they thought was going to be something cool for two weeks could possibly turn

into a lifelong addiction. It is hard to get high schoolers to listen about the effects

of vaping from parents because they have a rebellious attitude. This article was

written in order to get the users to connect to the article. This source is reliable

because it comes straight from a high school that took surveys around the whole

entire high school. The harmful effects of e-cigarettes are hidden behind cool

flavors and colors, leaving the young adults more susceptible to want to do it.
