Healthy Snacking for grade 3rd-5th Elementary Students

Goal: Our goal is for 3rd-5th-grade students to better understand the basics of nutrition and how

important it will be for their overall health.

Objectives:

○ Cognitive: At the end of the lesson, 70% of the students will be able to identify 3-

5 unhealthy snacks.

○ Psychomotor: At the end of the lesson, 70% of the students will be able to create a

healthy snack on their own.

Rationale:

Our audience will include 3rd through 5th-grade elementary students. Our group will be

focusing on nutrition and obesity. We will be providing different healthy items so that the

students can create their own healthy snack. Once they have finalized their snack, each team

member will ask them a few questions regarding what they learned from our lesson plan. In

addition, the group will be putting together a small game where the children will be sorting the

nutritious vs non-nutritious foods. By implementing this short session, we are hoping that

children will go to their parents or guardians and inform them of what they should be consuming

on a daily basis. We also hope that children can slowly transition from eating unhealthy snacks,

such as chips and sugary beverages, to healthy snacks, such as fruit and vegetables. This will not

take a day to accomplish but giving them some basic information will be a great start for them

and their families to make healthier diet changes. Our group believes that this topic is important

in preventing chronic health diseases, such as obesity and diabetes. We hope this lesson will

possibly give rise to an active and healthy future generation, inspire the children to utilize the
information provided to continue living a healthy and prolonged life, and to have them begin

transitioning from a meat/junk food/chemically infused/ preserved food diet to a rich and

nutritious whole foods diet. The change that we would all like to see after our lesson is for the

children to be more comfortable with eating fruits and vegetables and for them to know that it is

for their benefit. Another immediate change that we would like to see after this session is the

children talking with other children or adults about what healthy fruits and vegetables, they are

most likely to consume at home. The plan is for us to create a foundation for healthy foods

(fruits and vegetables), which will be the beginning of a new, healthier era.

Hanin brings: Permission slips, double sided tape, sample cups, mandarins, apples, pretzels,

whole wheat thins, unhealthy food labels

Nichole brings: Napkins, spoons, forks, tongs, healthy food labels, strawberries, grapes.

Procedure:

1. Introduction (5 minutes): Hanin

● Everyone introduces themselves. (State major, graduation date, & future professional

goals)

● State that we are coming from California State University, Chico from a Health

Education class.

● Introduce “Nutrition and Obesity” as our topic, the in-class activities that we will be

performing, and lastly, wrap it up with a few questions.

○ Do you know what healthy snacking means? (Chips vs. carrots)

○ Have you ever prepared a healthy snack? (Raise hands for yes or no)

○ Do you know what unhealthy eating can do to your health? (Make you feel tired,

hard to concentrate on school, can cause obesity & diabetes)

○ What fruits do you enjoy eating? We will have five children share their favorites

(Have students raise hands)

2. Informational piece (8 minutes): Cesar

● Explain that nutrition is very important for all of us, especially for growing children. In

order for our minds and bodies to feel good, we need to fuel our bodies with healthy

foods. Nutrients are in healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables.

● They help reduce the risk of disease, provide Vitamin A: healthy eyes & skin; Vitamin C:

heals, healthy teeth; Fiber: digestion.

● Unfortunately, we are surrounded by unhealthy food. It is easier to find unhealthy food

than healthy food.

● Imagine yourself sitting in a car when your parents drive you around. What do you see?

For the informational piece, we will be breaking it down a lot more because not all

students comprehend the complex science vocabulary.

● Cesar will not be naming any healthy foods because Ada will be covering that in her

poster board activity. As the informational piece continues, Cesar will perform a few

physical movements so that they can better understand what he is talking about. For

example: flexing your muscle so that it demonstrates that you could possibly grow strong

muscles and bones.

3. Poster Board Activity (20 minutes): Ada

● A poster board will be created ahead of time with two headings: unhealthy snacks vs

healthy snacks. Snack packaging will be lined with double-sided tape so that it will be

easier for children to place. Each student will be given two packaging labels one healthy

option and one unhealthy option to be placed on the poster board, learning to categorize

unhealthy snacks vs healthy snacks. Markers will be brought as well as for a backup to

create the headings for the activity.

● Hanin will be measuring the Cognitive Objective: our goal is that 70% of the students

will be able to identify three to five unhealthy snacks. This will be measured by asking

the students if they know what a healthier snack is compared to the unhealthy snacks.

Ada will put a snack on the board and ask for a show of hands to see who thinks a snack

is a healthy option. The data will be recorded by Hanin using paper and pen by counting

how many hands were raised to see if students were able to distinguish a healthy snack

versus an unhealthy snack.

4. Mini snack activities (20 minutes): Cesar and Nichole

● We will go into the class ahead of time and set up the tables into proper groups

○ There will be two tables together and they will be grouped with two tables behind

them.
○ Essentially there will be four tables in one group.

○ We estimate that there will be at least four to six students per group, depending on

the class size.

○ Nichole and Cesar will put all snack options in serving cups with a spoon, fork, or

tongs. There will be ziplock bags set out at each table for trail mix as well as

empty cups for making fruit cups and napkins.

● Before we begin the activities we will have them put into groups and go wash their hands

in the classroom sink. Ada will be supervising the students while they wash their hands

properly

● Nichole and Cesar will be introducing their snack, which will be a Fruit Cup and Trail

Mix. We will be naming what ingredients we have so that they have an idea of what they

could possibly be adding into the “snacks”.

● List of ingredients:

○ Trail mix placed in ziplock bags: Pretzels, Raisins, Whole wheat thins, Dark

chocolate chips

○ Fruit cup placed in sample cups: Mandarins, Apples, Blueberries, Pineapple,

Grapes, Strawberries

● Nichole and Cesar will each demonstrate what ingredients they would add into their own

snacks.

● Students will be able to go and prepare their fruit cup and trail mix, in groups. Each child

will be preparing their snacks on their own, after watching Nichole and Cesar

demonstrate their own snack mix.

● Once everyone has their snack they will be able to consume the snack they created.
● While they are eating their snack, all group members will be looking at the number of

students that are enjoying the snacks. This will help with future classes that would like to

implement a similar lesson plan.

● Ada will be measuring the Psychomotor Objective with paper and pen our goal is that

70% of the students will be able to create their own snacks

5. Wrap up/conclusion (7 minutes): Hanin

● Have students go back to seats. Ask how they liked their snack.

Questions:

● Is there anything that you would add or change about the trail mix or fruit cup?

● Do you now have an idea of how to create a healthy snack? Was it easy?

● What did you like the most from this lesson?

● Would you like to have us in your class again in the future?

This concludes our lesson, we hope you had fun and enjoyed eating your healthy snack. This will

enhance their continuation of healthy eating. Thank you! We will also thank the teacher for

allowing us to implement our lesson plan in her class.
