Bottle - a container, typically made of glass or plastic and with a narrow neck,
used for storing drinks or other liquids.

Identifying Recyclable Resources

Paper and cardboard grades can be a challenge to identify for clean recycling.
Some papers have aluminium or plastic coatings on them (usually for liquid
containment, like boxed drink packs or coffee cups) and these are often
unsuitable for recycling. Some materials are contaminated, especially with oil or
grease, and these then become unsuitable, such as food containers. Some
materials have better qualities than others, such as brightness, fibre length and
tearability.

Plastic can be one of the most confusing materials to identify for recycling.
Essentially, all thermoplastics can and should be recycled (these are flexible and
are typically containers or film used for packaging consumer goods, like drink
bottles) and thermosets should be recycled but are very hard to do (these are set
like concrete and are typically components of products, like TV monitors).

A plastic bag, polybag, or pouch is a type of container made of thin,

flexible, plastic film, nonwoven fabric, or plastic textile. Plastic bags are used for
containing and transporting goods such as foods, produce, powders, ice,
magazines, chemicals, and waste.

Why is Recycling Important
a
r
There are many good reasons for adding recycling to your routine, ranging
e
from a personal level to a global advantage.
c
Recycling is good for the environment, in the sense, we are using old and waste
o
products which are of no use and then converting them back to same new
m
products. Since we are saving resources and are sending less trash to the
m
landfills, it helps in reducing air and water pollution. Energy saving is important if
o
we are to reduce the future effects of global warming.
n
l
Recycling your waste makes you more responsible in the way you use and
y
dispose of it. It is evident from studies that people who do this instinctively cut
down on buying unwanted things from the supermarket. They think of how to u
dispose of the packaging or the product after use before even buying it. As a s
result, people end up saving a considerable amount of money while also saving e
the planet. d
Individuals, governing bodies and companies can take pride in minimizing their
waste as they are helping to reduce global environmental damage and making a
this earth a better place on which to live. t
1. Recycling is a way to reduce trash. h
A good recycler both ensures they recycle goods and also considers what they o
buy and whether the products have recycling capabilities. m
Buy products made from recycled materials or with recyclable or reusable e
packaging. Plastic packaging that is marked code 1, 2 or 3 is commonly recycled
in most municipalities; several councils now also accept codes 4-7 (Check with c
your local council). a

v
Some Ways to Reduce Waste e
Bring reusable bags and containers n
when shopping, traveling, or t
packing lunches or leftovers.
d
Choose products that are a
returnable, reusable, or refillable m
over single-use items. a
g
Avoid individually wrapped items, e
snack packs, and single-serve
containers. Buy large containers of t
items or from bulk bins whenever o
practical.
o
Be aware of double-packaging - some "bulk packages" are just individually u
wrapped items packaged yet again and sold as a bulk item. r

Purchase items such as dish soap and laundry detergents in concentrate forms. e
n
2. Recycling Creates Jobs v
Apart from the environmental benefits, think of the employment that it can i
generate. When you put your waste in different bins for paper, plastics, glass and r
so on, the contents of each are further segregated and taken to recycling o
plants. The man power involved in the logistics and processing of your waste is n
considerable and thus you are helping to keep them in jobs and aid in welfare of m
their families. e
n
The danger of global climate change has forced us to take drastic measures to cut t
down on pollution levels to slow down if not eradicate this phenomenon. In view of .
this, ambitious but necessary targets for recycling are also being set by
governments around the world.

To meet these targets, more and more people must take action regularly. As a
result, the amount of waste reaching the landfill sites is reduced and the quantity
of land fill sites is reduced. Hence better land use for other constructive
purposes is utilized.

3. Recycling can earn money

 by selling plastics, cans and other recyclable solid materials.
 making recyclable solids into new useful products

4. Recycling saves money

 save your leftover
 use dryer sheets as air fresheners
 refill water bottles instead of throwing them out
 use empty butter containers to store leftovers
 use old T-shirts as rags
 save coffee cans and jars to store small items
 leave notes on pieces of scrap paper instead of using a writing pad
 use old towels to dry your pets

5. Recycling Reduces Toxic E-Waste

When we talk about recycling
household and wor k place things,
we tend to ignore or are less aware
of how to deal with the electrical and
electronic waste (sometimes called
e-waste). E-waste is valuable as a
source of secondary raw material
but also toxic if disposed of
improperly. Due to rapid
technology change, obsolescent
items have created a fast growing
mass of electronic waste around the
globe.

In order to reduce this, working TVs, monitors, computers, cell phones,

batteries and other consumer electronics can be sold or donated, thereby
prolonging their useful life.

What Are the Most Significant Benefits of Paper Recycling?

Recycling paper conserves natural resources, saves energy, reduces greenhouse

gas emissions, and keeps landfill space free for other types of trash that can't be
recycled.

CHARCOAL MAKING FROM WASTE PAPERS

OVER 50% OF FILIPINOS USE CHARCOAL, WOOD
By Richmond Mercurio
January 03, 2014

However, making charcoal means cutting trees. Therefore, there is a compelling

need to find alternative fuel sources and new methods that can minimize the
need for wood to make charcoal.

Paper is one of the major contributors of solid waste by either weight or volume.
Yet it is highly recyclable and can be manufactured into some other materials that
cannot destroy our forests and bring about environmental degradation, but
instead, this will help minimize solid waste, reduce forest denudation due to
alternative charcoal making. Aside from its environmental benefits, it will also
help families with their budget since paper charcoal can easily be made and the
materials to be used are widely available. Aside from being economical,
production of paper charcoal is very easy. Any person of any age can do it.
Most importantly, it could minimize our solid waste making a cleaner and greener
mother land. Thus through Isaro ECO, we will train the community how this
transformation is made. Since it is easy and cheap.

IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING CODES OF DIFFERENT PLASTICS

The plastic recycle codes, also referred to as recycle symbols standards, were
developed by The Society of the Plastics Industry as a uniform way to identify the
type of plastic used in the manufacturing of products and packing. The plastic
recycle codes system consists of a number enclosed within the universal
recycling symbol, which is a triangle formed by three arrows. The number
inside the recycling symbol indicates the type of plastic polymer the item
is made from.
FIRST GRADE 5
QUARTER SCIENCE
117

Because it is so important to recycle plastic, you’ll find this symbol and number on
almost everything made out of plastic.

Plastic is a versatile and inexpensive material with thousands of uses, but it is

also a significant source of pollution. Some worrisome emerging environmental
issues involve plastics, including gigantic oceanic garbage patches and the
microbeads problem. Recycling can alleviate some of the problems, but the
confusion over what we can and cannot recycle continues to confound
consumers. Plastics are especially troublesome, as different types require
different processing to be reformulated and re-used as raw material. To
effectively recycle plastic items, you are encourage to use only code number 1
and 2 as seen below.
