JEANS FOR GENES DAY

THURSDAY 24TH JULY AT REECE HIGH SCHOOL
Jeans for Genes Day raises much needed funds for the Children’s Medical Research
Institute (CMRI). Scientists and doctors at the CRMI are researching how our genes
work and how faults in our genes cause diseases including cancer, epilepsy, and eye
disorders.
On Thursday the 24th July Reece High will be participating in Genes for Jeans day with students allowed to
wear their jeans for a gold coin donation. Over the next week the Grade Nine leadership students will be
offering fundraising items for sale including badges, wristbands and jewellery. It is hoped Reece High School
students get behind this worthy cause.

World Skills Try’a Trade

On Wednesday 9th July, 35 Grade 9 students from Reece High School participated in the “Try’a Trade”, held
at the Burnie Civic Centre. Students were given an opportunity to speak to qualified trades people about
their work experience, training and how to gain skills suitable for that particular trade. Students were able to
view demonstrations of the trades and then given the opportunity to have a go themselves. Some of the
trade’s people included Bricklayers, Carpenters, Chefs, Diesel Mechanics, Tilers and Hairdressers.

It was an enjoyable day for everyone involved. Feedback from students was very encouraging. They enjoyed
the “hands on experience”, with some students even laying bricks. Thanks to all the students for their
excellent behaviour, enthusiasm, and positive attitude in the way they participated. I hope they found the day a
rewarding and valuable experience.

Thanks also go to Miss Meek, Natasha Armitstead & Moene Snyders and Brian Webber for their help and
support.

Department of Education
World Challenge Reece High 08/09
20 students and 2 teachers from Reece High are participating in World Challenge Expedition’s trip to Vietnam
during the latter part of 2009.

Our team have already started thinking of excellent ideas to help them raise some of the money necessary to
go on the trip. Some of our ideas include holding a Trivia and Quiz night, a night where students can compete
against other students as teams in games like halo and battlefield and also conducting a silent auction like night.
When functions are chosen and dates are made students will be informed.

The idea behind our trip to Vietnam is to not only go for an amazing time and visit such a beautiful country
but it’s to do our little bit for the people living in the extraordinary conditions. Vietnam is a developing
country, this means there are a lot more people living in poverty earning next to nothing for a very hard days
work. To most of us it seems unfair and we would love to go and try our best to make a difference to as
many of those people as we can in any way that we can.

The most amazing thing about the entire trip is that everything that we do over there, everything that
happens is up to us; we get to pick where we want to go and what we want to do in those places. We will be
in Vietnam for around about a month, a lot of people have never been away from their families for more than
a week, and nearly everyone would have never been away for a full month, so it will be hard work for
everyone to stop the home sickness.

Fortunately it is still not too late to join us all on this journey, if you would like to come along or even to just
get more information you can contact Cindy Johnston at Reece on 64208100, Mrs. Johnston will be able to
give you the information you need.

On behalf of the entire team I thank you all for your support along our journey. Ethan Barron
