ECAT
Scanner
The scanner components and operation are similar to scanners in many other Xerox
products including the scanner on the (Copeland) WorkCentre® Pro 2128/2636/3545.
The scanner uses a Half-Rate and a Full-Rate Carriage with an Exposure Lamp and
angled mirrors to illuminate, scan and direct the document image for processing by the
CCD/Lens Assembly. The Scanner Drive Motor is a stepper motor that turns to move the
half-rate and full-rate carriages, via a series of cables and pulleys.
The starting position of the scanner carriages is sensed by a Registration Sensor after the
carriage stepper motor turns to move the scanner components to the home position.
An operation is performed to calibrate the scanner white and black reference points when
the carriage stepper motor turns to scan a white reference strip under the glass slot on the
left of the scanner.
27
4/5/2006
ECAT
Scanning of the document on the glass begins when the Scanner Drive Motor turns to
move the half-rate and full-rate carriages at a steady and precise rate of speed.
The relative position of the half-rate and full-rate carriage to the CCD/Lens assembly is
maintained to keep the document image in focus (focal length) at the CCD light sensor as
the scanner moves across the document.
The CCD sensor on the PWB generates RGB color image signals as the document is
scanned.
The Image Processing System (IPS) PWB circuits process the CCD RGB color image
signals.
The Controller receives the processed signals from the IPS PWB and produces CMYK
raster video signals for the Raster Output Scanner (ROS).
The IPS PWB also contains a small ROM IC.
Document size sensing occurs when the Platen Angle Sensor cycles to signal the
Platen/Document Handler opened and closed. Sub-scan (front-to-back) size is detected
by the CCD. Main scan (left-to-right) size is detected by the Document Size Sensor.
Reduction/enlargement is then calculated by the control subsystem based on document
size, UI job programming values and paper tray settings.
Power for the Scanner components is supplied by the IIT LVPS located at the rear of the
Scanner.
28
4/5/2006
ECAT
When scanning documents through the document handler the scanner is parked in a
stationary position while the documents pass over the scanner. Further details are given
in the Document Handler section.
Scanning operations beyond this point are the same as performed in Document Glass
Scanning. – i. e.:
• The resulting optical document image formed is reflected to the CCD assembly to
generate color image signals.
• These signals are then processed by the Image Processing System (IPS) PWB
circuits to produce signals for processing by the Controller to yield raster video
for the Raster Output Scanner (ROS).
29

ECAT
Document Handler
The type of document handler used is called a Duplex Automatic Document Feeder
(DADF).
The DADF employs Constant Velocity Transport (CVT) technology used on a number of
other products [e. g. (CAMDEN) C226]. In CVT, the scanner carriages are parked in a
fixed position and the DADF moves the document over the scanner carriage at a
controlled constant rate.

DADF Drives
The Feed Drive and Regi (stepper) Motors and drive belts and pulleys provide drive at
various speeds to the DADF document transport components.

If there are different sizes of documents in the set placed in the tray, the operator presses
the Mixed Sized Originals button (found in Layout Adjustment Tab/Original Size screen),

DADF Reduction/Enlargement
When the paper/copy magnification ratio is set by the user to the automatic mode, the
document length and width sizes that are calculated and/or sensed are used by the control
programs to determine the proper reduction/enlargement.

After the first side is scanned, the Exit Rollers do not move the document into the Output
Tray. In this case, the document is turned over and the second side is scanned. Then the
document is turned over again in order to deliver the document to the Output Tray in the
original page order.
Duplex operations begin after the first side of the document is scanned and before the
document is moved to the Output Tray:

SCP
The (Imperia) WorkCentre® 7228/7235/7245 Service Call Procedure (SCP) follows the
conventional approach used on many of the Xerox multifunctional color products
including the (Copeland) WorkCentre® Pro 2128/2636/3545.
Fault isolation for problems sensed and declared by the machine control system follow
the same overall approach used in (Copeland) WorkCentre® Pro 2128/2636/3545.
Fault messages and codes are displayed and Repair Analysis Procedures (RAPs) are
provided to isolate problems to the cause.
Fault Codes
Fault codes in the Controller, FAX, Scanner and Document Handler areas are
unique to the (Imperia) WorkCentre® 7228/7235/7245.
RAPs
The unique Controller along with the different FAX, Scanner and DADF
components in the (Imperia) WorkCentre® 7228/7235/7245 result in a number of
new or different Repair Analysis Procedures (RAPs) to aid in isolating the cause
of machine declared faults in these areas.
In addition, specific directions in a number of the RAPs, and some of the General
Procedures used with these RAPs, are unique or different from those used on the
(Copeland) WorkCentre® Pro 2128/2636/3545.
IQ/User Faults
Image Quality fault isolation follows the same overall approach used in the (Copeland)
WorkCentre® Pro 2128/2636/3545.
The unique Controller along with the different FAX, Scanner and DADF components in
the (Imperia) WorkCentre® 7228/7235/7245 result in a number of new or different RAPs.
Although the outcome is the basically the same for these procedures, the main difference
is in the use of built-in routines in the (Imperia) WorkCentre® 7228/7235/7245 control
system versus the use of PWS routines when servicing the (Copeland) WorkCentre® Pro
2128/2636/3545.
48
4/5/2006
ECAT
The use of many of these routines is straightforward by using the instructions and look-up
tables of data (e.g. - component control IO codes, NVM values, etc.) that are located in
the Repairs and Adjustments and/or General Procedures sections

Parts Lists
The Parts Lists and illustrations in (Imperia) WorkCentre® 7228/7235/7245 are different
from the (Copeland) WorkCentre® Pro 2128/2636/3545 Parts Lists.
In addition to completely different parts for the Controller, FAX, Scanner and DADF,
there are part numbers assigned to parts which were changed to comply with RoHS.
General Procedures
The use of the UI versus the PWS to perform service actions changes many of the
General Procedures as compared to those used on the (Copeland) WorkCentre® Pro
2128/2636/3545. As with the RAPs, the outcome is the same for these procedures. The
main difference is in the use of built-in control system routines versus the use of PWS
routines.
A number of the General Procedures refer to data from printouts of Reports and Lists
(e. g. HFSI and Shutdown Reports). These Reports and Lists are found in the CE screen.
This CE screen is accessed by entering Service Mode; pressing the machine status button;
selecting the Reports/Lists tab and then selecting the CE button on the Reports / Lists
touch screen.
Wiring Data
The unique Controller along with the different FAX, Scanner and DADF components in
the (Imperia) WorkCentre® 7228/7235/7245 result in a number of new or different
power and control signal Wiring Diagrams and Block Schematic Diagrams (BSDs).
