Text for Task Two: Making notes

the scaleof the work meansthat we'll be introducinga numberof temporarychangesto the
Unfortunately,
whole transportnetwork. I'm afraidthat this will causesome disruption, but we will be doingeverything
possibleto makesureyour journeysremainas smooth as possible.

This is the first stageof our plannedimprovementsto the transport network... and will focusmainlyon
raisingthe safetylevelson our services. This is obviouslya largejob and will take sometime. We anticipate
that it'll be | 2 weeks before the entire systemreturns to normal althoughsome serviceswill be restored
from about 9 weeksonwards.I realisethat some passengers will be severelyinconvenienced by this, but it's
essential that we carry out this maintenance work and, indeed,it'll certainlybenefitall of our customersin
the long-term.The next phaseof repairwork will beginin Marchnext year.

The greatestchangeswill be to metro services.Whilst serviceson the Blueand Orangelineswill continue

as normal, the Green linewill operatea greatlyreducedservice.Trainswill only run from 9am to 5pm
and will not be stoppingat city centre stations, which will be closedfor the duration.Passengers wishing
to travel to these stationsare advisedto use Bus 5l which will be running extra servicesto cope with the
increasednumberof passengers.

Unfortunately, the entire tram network will be shut down on Thursdayafternoonsto allow workmen
accessto the tracks.Additionally, the rail link to the airport will be closed. As is normal, all other tram
serviceswill finishat the usualtime of I lpm when a nightbus servicewill take over. Night bus times and
routes are listed in local newspapersand on the city's website.

As regardsto ticl(ets, for the duration of the maintenanceworl< we'll be reducingthe price on return trip
ticketsand singletrip ticketswill be validfor 45 minutesrather than the usual30. Customerswill be able
to purchasetickets from the usualoutlets. Also, for this period only, tram tickets will be valid on all bus
servicesand there will be no needto buy separateticlcets.

Manythanksand I apologiseagainfor the disruption over the next few weeks.

Text for Task Three: Radio programme

Fred: As host of television'sThe WeddingShowand Payto Play,CharlieKellermanhasbeen

entertainingthe publicwith his game showsfor many, manyyears. This is Fred Bateman's
phone-in,a big welcometo someoneI haven'tseenfor manyyears...CharlieKellerman!!!

Charlie: Thank-you,thank-you...

Fred: And now to our first caller,Barbarain London - hello Barbara

Barbara: Hello Fred,my questionis - Charlie, how long haveyou been on television?

Charfie: ha,ha,ha'75 or'76,)znuary6th, l975,The

lstarcedontelevisionin 1993or 1994--no,
WeddingShow.Which makesme what? About 251And I'm still lookingfor a part in a
Hollpvood movie, no one hasaskedme yet!

Barbara: They should! What's your favourite gameshow to watch?Do you watch your own Same
shows?

Charlie: Payto Playis the only show that I haveever done that I watch every Fridaynight.I have
never ever had a show before that I was a part of that I watched so often. Not only does my
wife like to watch it, but my childrenwon't missan episode.lt's very unusualfor me and for
people in my business. We don't normallywatch everythingwe do.

Fred: And now onto George, he's phoningfrom Manchester

George: Hi Charlie,I'd like to ask - what haveyou enjoyeddoing most in the yearsthat you've been
on television?

Charlie: I've certainlyenjoyedevery show I've done immensely. But in all honesty,Payto Playis the
favourite of all shows I've done, it's a very interestingshow, with the most dynamicand most
drama, and naturallythe most excitementof any show I've done.

George: . ...and how exactlydid you get your start as a gameshow host with The Wedding Show 25
yearsago?

Charlie: My start was actuallyon a show with Fred Batemanhere oventy...six yearsago.

Fred: Oh yes!

Charlie: I was on his talk show as a singer. And at the end of the show I sPentsometime talkingto
him and he askedif I'd ever thought of doing a gameshow. I did try out for a show, I worked
very hard to give a good audition and of course, that was the end of my musicalcareer, and
that gameshow was The Wedding Show.

Fred: I remember that Charlie, you were a great singer, but you alwaysacted iust like a game-show
host!! Now to Johnfrom Carlisle.

John: What was the best moment you've had as the host of Payto Playl

Charlie: You know welve givenawayto date f 16.5millionsinceNovember!Can you imaginethat!?

That'san enormousamountof money.When you're givingawaymoneyiit<ettrat,you have
a lot of greattimes. There are some peopleI can remember....For example,Arthur Ballard
from New Yorl<City literallystood aloneand riskedhis f200,000 for f7..2million.And
that was a very excitingtime for me as a host of a gameshow. I think it was the first time
in the historyof a gameshow that someonehad beenasked,"Would you like to risk your
f200,000for L2.2 million?" That'sthe lasttime I was neryouson a show!

Fred: ... and what do you think separatesPayto Playfrom other current "multi-millionpound
gameshows"?

Charlie: Good question, and I would like to thpnk you for askingit. One of the thingsthat's very
different,is the tensionbetweenthe players.Thesepeopleare often nervousabout
winningmoneyor about eacho1her.They'venever.metbeforedoingthe show.So it's very
interesting.

Fred: ...and how do you keepa neutralexpressionon a big moneyquestionwhen you know the .
answer?

Charlie: I probablylearnedthat on The Wedding Show. I try not to show the person,it's rny job
not to show the playersor the audiencewhat the answer is from the look on my face.lf I
was 6ne of those peoplewho couldn'tstop smiling,or who soundednervouswhen reading
out the answers,I wouldn't be a gameshow host. lt hashappenedthough, there was this
one contestantwho could basically read me very well - I'd frown or wrinkle my brow
or somethingand she knew that hadto b6 the right anSwer.SometimesI don't know the
answer,I don't alwaysknow what it is. SometimesI don't evenlook at the answersmyself,I
playalongwith the iont"rt"nt, it's more fun for me -so I can try to guesstoo. So if you see
me with a really blankface-it's becauseI don't know either!

Fred: And now, our final caller.Sharonfrom Norwich. Over to you, Sharon.

Sharon: Haveyou ever wanted to play Payto Playyourself?

Charlie: I'm a'terriblegameplayer!I can host,but I don't think I'd be very good at playing,I think I'd
crackunderthe stress!| want to be the one askingthe questions!lI respectthe players,I
reallydo.

Fred: How hard is it to beeomea contestantl Do you haveanythingto do with the screening?

Charlie: Let me announcesomething.lf any of the peoplewatchingwould like to be a conrestanton

Payto Playwe would love to haveyou. There is a test you haveto take, peoplethink it must
be very difficult,but it's a reasonable
levelof difficulty.lt's definitelynot enoughto pur you
off.

Fred: I'm afraidthat's all we've got time for right now, I'd like to thank all our callers, and of
course...CharlieKellerman.lt was good to seeyou again.

Charlie: Likewise.likewise.
