Student: Daniel Sheehan Professor: Professor Brower

Course: EDU 5230 Date: 5/7/19

Grade: 3 Topic: Winter Content Area: S.T.E.M.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
After researching techniques online, students will attempt to construct their own snowball
launcher. They will use recycled materials that I will bring from home, such as empty plastics
bottles, empty milk cartons, cardboard boxes, as well as materials such as string, tape and
twisties. Students will search online using the app called Pinterest. There are many creative
ideas to use, and students can incorporate these ideas if they wish with ideas of their own.
Students will be given a sheet to create their own design before they begin to build. Students
will be given a rubric and will be expected to score a 16 out of 20.
NYS-CCLS/ + NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS
NYS Technology Standard
Standard 5: Make strategic use of digital media and visual displays to express information and
enhance understanding of presentations.
Include digital media and/or visual displays in representation to:
-8SL5: Clarify information, strengthen claims or findings, and evidence and add elements
of interest to engage the audience.
Indicator: This will be evident when students are able to explore and identify ideas they
want to use for their inventions.
NYS Science Standard
Standard 3-PS2-1.: Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of
balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.
Standard 3-PS2-2.: Make observations and/or measurements of an object’s motion to provide
evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.
Indicator: This will be evident when students are able to construct

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES
Computer/iPad, Pinterest, pencil, worksheet with space to draw design, empty plastic bottles,
milk cartons, cardboard boxes, rubber bands, string, paper clips, twisties, scotch tape, masking
tape
MOTIVATION
I will use present some ideas in Pinterest on the projector screen for all students to see. I will
show them some ideas and make sure they know how to research on Pinterest.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
I will project my iPad onto the main screen in our classroom. I will show the students the
Pinterest app and show them how to explore on it. Once I have done this, I will pair students up
into groups of two or three. Each pair/group will be given an iPad to explore their own ideas to
create a snowball launcher. They will be given paper and pencils to design their ideas for the
launcher. Then, students will take materials back to their desks and build their launcher. This
lesson will take place in the winter. If we fortunate enough to have snow, we will go outside and
test it using real snow. If not, we will use paper balls in a secluded spot in the hallway.
(What are some of the materials we can use to build a SnowBall Launcher? How best can we
design/build our Snow Ball Launcher? How can we build it in order to make the snow ball go a
far distance?)
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
Demonstration-I will provide examples on Pinterest on the board from my iPad.
Scaffolding-I will provide all of the necessary materials for the students to use to build with. I
will also be walking round the room helping students who may need it. Building can be difficult
so students may need a hand which I will be happy to provide when necessary.
ADAPTATIONS
I will mix students who are above average with students who are below average. I think it is
important for students who struggle to have help, not just from me, but to have support from
their peers as well. I also think that for students who may struggle with bookwork, this project
provides them with a hands-on approach.
DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Students who are below average will be expected to receive a grade of 14 out of 20 on the rubric.
Average students will expected to receive a 15 out of 20. Above average students will be
expected to score a 16 out of 20 on my teacher-created rubric.
ASSESSMENT
Students who are below average will be expected to receive a grade of 14 out of 20 on the rubric.
Average students will expected to receive a 15 out of 20. Above average students will be
expected to score a 16 out of 20 on my teacher-created rubric. The rubric consists of five
teacher-selected categories: Plan, Information Gathering, Modification/Testing, Function,
Construction-Care Taken.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Students can search for cool things they want to build when they come back to class. Students
are encouraged to build something of their own at home, and bring it into class to share.
FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES
Direct Teacher Intervention-I will help students who need it continue to build their launchers,
and make reparations when necessary.
Academic Enrichment-Students can continue to explore on Pinterest and build cool new things
that they find.
