CORRELATIVE ( PAIRED )CONJUNCTIONS FROM 16


TENSES WHICH ARE USED TO COMBINE INTO
COMPOUND SENTENCES (= kalimat majemuk setara).

A. If we want to combine the two simple


sentences into one compound sentence
, so we use correlative ( paired )
conjunctions such as :

1. Both ......and ....... : Subject dianggap jamak.


2. Either ....or .......... : Verb disesuaikan dengan
subject kedua atau setelah “ or “.
3. .....and .....too.......
4. and so.....
5. Not only ......but also..... :Verb disesuaikan dengan
subject setelah “ but also “.

Examples :

16 tenses in English :

FUTURE – PERFECT – CONTINUOUS.

1. Present tense : S + V1 ( + s/ es ) +O +....; Or : S + to be : ( am, is,


are ) + ( adjective / noun/ adverb ). =(1).
Example :
1.
a). Miss Ucrit concentrates on my English explanation.
b). Mr. Usrok concentrates on my English explanation.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound
sentences and they are :
= Both Miss Ucrit and Mr. Usrok concentrate on my English explanation.
= Either Miss Ucrit or Mr. Usrok concentrates on my English explanation.
= Miss Ucrit concentrates on my English explanation and Mr. Usrok does
too.
= Miss Ucrit concentrates on my English explanation and so does Mr.
Usrok.
= Not only Miss Ucrit but also Mr. Usrok concentrates on my English
explanation.

2. a. Miss Ucrit is dilligent.


b. Mr. Usrok is dilligent.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound
sentences and they are :
= Both Miss Ucrit and Mr. Usrok are dilligent.
= Either Miss Ucrit or Mr. Usrok is dilligent.
= Miss Ucrit is dilligent and Mr. Usrok is too.
= Miss Ucrit is dilligent and so is Mr.Usrok.
= Not only Miss Ucrit but also Mr. Usrok is dilligent.

2.Past Tense : S + V2+ O +..... Or : S + to be :( was ,


were )+ ( adjective , noun, adverb ).=(2).
Example :

a).Mr. Usrok wrote the letter carefully.
b).Miss. Ucrit wrote the letter carefully.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into
compound sentences and they are :
= Both Mr. Usrok and Miss. Ucrit wrote the letter carefully.
= Either Mr. Usrok or Miss Ucrit wrote the letter carefully.
=Mr. Usrok wrote the letter carefully and Miss Ucrit did too.
= Mr. Usrok wrote the letter carefully and so did Miss Ucrit.
= Not only Mr. Usrok but also Miss Ucrit wrote the letter carefully.

2. a). Mr. Usrok was absent at the meeting.


b). Miss. Ucrit was absent at the meeting.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into

3.Present Future Tense : S + ( will, may, must, can, shall ) + V1 + O +.....

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound
sentences and they are :

= The students will focus on their own study and Mr. Usrok will too.
= The students will focus on their own study and so will Mr. Usrok .
= Either the students or Mr. Usrok will focus on his own study.
= Both the students and Mr. Usrok will focus on their own study.
=Not only the students but also Mr.Usrok will focus on his own study.

b). The students are going to carry out the first semester final test.
Miss Ucrit is going to carry out the first semester final test.
= Both the students and Miss Ucrit are going to carry out the first
semester final test.
= Not only the students but also Miss Ucrit is going to carry out the first
semester final test.
= The students are going to carry out the first semester final test and Miss
Ucrit is too.
= The students are going to carry out the first semester final test and so is
Miss Ucrit.
= Either the students or Miss Ucrit is going to carry out the first semester
final test.

3. Past Future tense : S + ( would, might, , could, should , ought to + V1 +


O +..... ( 3 )
Example :

The students should develop their knowledge. The teacher should develop his
knowledge.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound
sentences and they are :

= The students should develop their knowledge and the teacher should
too.

= The students should develop their knowledge and so should the
teacher.
= Either the students or the teacher should develop his knowledge.
= Both the students and the teacher should develop their knowledge.
= Not only the students but also the teacher should develop his knowledge.

4. Present Perfect Tense : S + have / has + V3 + O +.......(11).


Example :
a.The students have already eaten breakfast.
b. A teacher has already eaten breakfast.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound


sentences and they are :
= The students have already eaten breakfast and a teacher has too.
= The students have already eaten breakfast and so has a teacher.
= Either the students or a teacher has already eaten breakfast.
= Both the students and a teacher have already eaten breakfast.
= Not only the students but also a teacher has already eaten breakfast.

5. Past Perfect Tense : S + had + V3 + O +........ ( 12 )


Example :
All of us had taken a bath before going to school. Miss Ucrit had taken a
bath before going to school.
The above sentences have the same meaning as :
All of us had taken a bath before we went to scholl. Miss Ucrit had taken a
bath before she went to school.

Or : All of us took a bath before going to school. Miss Ucrit took a bath
before going to school.
= All of us took a bath before we went to school. Miss Ucrit took a
bath before she went to school.
Or : Miss Ucrit went to school after she had taken a bath.
Or : Miss Ucrit went to school after she took bath.
Or : Miss Ucrit went to school after taking a bath.

The reason : because the time relationship has already been clear.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound


sentences and they are :
= Both all of us and Miss Ucrit had taken a bath before going to school.
= Either all of us or Miss Ucrit had taken a bath before going to school.
= All of us had taken a bath before going to school and Miss Ucrit had too.
= All of us had taken a bath before going to school and so had Miss Ucrit.
= Not only all of us but also Miss Ucrit had taken a bath before going to
school.

6. Present Continuous Tense : S + to be ( am / is/ are) + Ving + O +......(

Example :
The students are sitting on the chairs now. Mrs Endang is sitting on the
chair now.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound
sentences and they are :
= The students are sitting on the chairs now and Mrs Endang is too.
= The students are sitting on the chairs now and so is Mrs. Endang.
= Both the students and Mrs Endang are sitting on the chairs now .
= Either the students or Mrs Endang is sitting on the chair now.
= Not only the students but also Mrs Endang is sitting on the chair now.

7. Past Continuous Tense : S + to be (was / were) + Ving + O +.........( 14


).

The students were doing their English test when the teacher entered the
classroom.
Miss Ucrit was doing her English test when the teacher entered the classroom.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound


sentences and they are :

=The students were doing their English test when the teacher entered the
classroom and Miss ucrit was too.
= The students were doing their English test when the teacher entered the
classroom and so was Miss Ucrit.
= Either the students or Miss Ucrit was doing her English test when the teacher
entered the classroom.
= Both the students and Miss Ucrit were doing their English test when the
teacher entered the classroom.
= Not only the students but also Miss Ucrit was doing her English test when the
teacher entered the classroom.

8. Present Future Perfect Tense : S + (will, can, shall, may, must )+ have +
V3 + O +......====== (9).
Example :

The students will have completed to do their tasks by the end of this week. Mr.
Usrok will have completed to do his tasks by the end of this week.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound
sentences and they are :

= The students will have completed to do their tasks by the end of this week
and Mr. Usrok will too.
= The students will have completed to do their tasks by the end of this week

and so will Mr. Usrok.
= Either the students or Mr. Usrok will have completed to do his tasks by
the end of this week.
= Both the students and Mr. Usrok will have completed to do their tasks by
the end of this week.
= Not only the students but also Mr Usrok will have completed to do his

9. Past Future Perfect Tense : S + (would, could, should, might, ought to) +
have + V3 + O +...... =====(5).
Example :

The students should have done their tasks. He should have done his tasks.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound
sentences and they are :

= The students should have done their tasks and he should too.
= The students should have done their tasks and so should he.
= Either the students or he should have done his tasks.
= Both the students and he should have done their tasks.
= Not only the students but also he should have done his tasks.

10. Present Perfect Continous Tense : S + have / has + been + Ving + O +......
=====(15).
Example :

I have been teaching my subject in this school since 1988.


Mr. Usrok has been teaching his subject in this school since 1988.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound


sentences and they are :

= I have been teaching my subject in this school since 1988 and Mr. Usrok
has too.
= I have been teaching my subject in this school since 1988 and so has Mr. Usrok.
= Either I or Mr. Usrok has been teaching his subject in this school since 1988.
= Both I and Mr. Usrok have been teaching our subject in this school since 1988.
= Not only I but also Mr Usrok has been teaching his subject in this school since
1988.

11. Past Perfect Continuos Tense : S + had + been + Ving + O + ........ (16).

= is used to indicate / express an activity which happened before or


until a a certain time in the past .

Example :

a. I had been studying English for two hours before I went to bed at
10.00 p.m last night.
b. Mr. Usrok had been studying English for two hours before he went
to bed at 10.00 p.m last night.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound


sentences and they are :
= I had been studying English for two hours before I went to bed at 10.00
p.m last night and Mr. Usrok had too.
= I had been studying English for two hours before I went to bed at 10.00
p.m last night and so had Mr. Usrok.
= Either I or Mr. Usrok had been studying English for two hours before he
went to bed at 10.00 p.m last night.
= Both I and Mr. Usrok had been studying English for two hours before
we went to bed at 10.00 p.m last night.
= Not only I but also Mr. Usrok had been studying English for two hours
before he went to bed at 10.00 p.m last night.

12. Present Future Continuous Tense : S + ( will, can, shall, must, may ) + be
+ Ving + O +.......====== (8).
Example :
Mr. Usrok will be attending the meeting. Mrs. Ucrit will be attending the
meeting.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound


sentences and they are :
= Both Mr Usrok and Mrs Ucrit will be attending the meeting.
= Either Mr Usrok or Mrs Ucrit will be attending the meeting.
= Mr Usrok will be attending the meeting and Mrs Ucrit will too.
= Mr Usrok will be attending the meeting and so will Mrs Ucrit.
= Not only Mr Usrok but also Mrs Ucrit will be attending the meeting.

13. Past Future Continuous Tense : S + (would , should, could, might, ought
to ) + be + Ving + O +.........=====(4)
Example :

The students should be studying their subjects. I should be studying my subjects.


The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound
sentences and they are :

=The students should be studying their subjects and I should too.


= The students should be studying their subjects and so should I.
= Either the students or I should be studying my subjects.
= Both the students and I should be studying our subjects.
= Not only the students but also I should be studying my subjects.

14. Present Future Perfect Continuous Tense : S + (will , can , must, may, shall
) + have + been + Ving + O +....... ==== ( 10 )
Example :

The students will have been studying an interesting topic by the end of this month.
Miss Ucrit will have been studying an interesting topic by the end of this month.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound


sentences and they are :

= The students will have been studying an interesting topic by the end of
this month and Miss Ucrit will too.
= The students will have been studying an interesting topic by the end of
this month and so will Miss Ucrit.
= Either the students or Miss. Ucrit will have been studying an interesting
topic by the end of this month.
= Both the students and Miss . Ucrit will have been studying an interesting
topic by the end of this month.
= Not only the students but also Miss Ucrit will have been studying an
interesting topic by the end of this month.

15. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense : S + (would, should, could, might,
ought to ) + have + been + Ving + O +....... =====(6).
Example :

The students should have been reading Chapter 5 by the end of December last
year.
I should have been reading Chapter 5 by the end of December last year.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into compound


sentences and they are :

= The students should have been reading Chapter 5 by the end of December last
year and I should too.
= The students should have been reading Chapter 5 by the end of December last
year and so should I.
= Either the students or I should have been reading Chapter 5 by the end of
December last year.
= Both the students and I should have been reading Chapter 5 by the end of
December last year.
= Not only the students but also I should have been reading Chapter 5 by the end
of December last year.

B. If we want to combine the two negative simple


sentences into one compound sentence , so we use
correlative conjunctions such as :
1. Both .....and....... :Subject dianggap jamak.

2. Neither .......nor....... :Verb disesuaikan dengan
subject kedua atau setelah “ nor “.
3. ......and.......either .......
4. and neither......
5. Not only ......but also..... : Verb disesuaikan dengan
subject setelah “ but also “.

Examples :

16 tenses in English :
FUTURE – PERFECT – CONTINUOUS.

1. Present tense : S + V1 ( + s/ es ) + O +........Or : S + to be : (am,


is, are) + adjective / noun/ adverb .
Example :
a). The students don’t join the flag ceremony every Sunday.
b). Mr. Usrok doesn’t join the flag ceremony every Sunday.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into
compound sentences and they are :
= Both the students and Mr. Usrok don’t join the flag ceremony every
Sunday.
= Neither the students nor Mr. Usrok joins the flag ceremony every
Sunday.
= The students don’t join the flag ceremony every Sunday and Mr. Usrok
doesn’t either.
= The students don’t join the flag ceremony every Sunday and neither
does Mr. Usrok.
= Not only the students but also Mr. Usrok doesn’t join the flag
ceremony every Sunday.

Note :
a. He doesn’t have a pen.
b. He doesn’t have paper.
= He has neither a pen nor paper.

2. a.The students are not lazy.


b.The teacher is not lazy.
The two simple sentences above can be combined into
compound sentences and they are :
= Both the students and the teacher are not lazy.
= Neither the students nor the teacher is lazy.

compound sentences and they are :
=Both Mr. Usrok and Miss Ucrit didn’t watch TV last night.
= Neither Mr. Usrok nor Miss Ucrit watched TV last night.
=Mr. Usrok didn’t watch TV last night and Miss Ucrit didn’t either.
= Mr. Usrok didn’t watch TV last night and neither did Miss Ucrit.

Example :

The two simple sentences above can be combined into


compound sentences and they are :

= Both Mr Usrok and Miss Ucrit had not eaten breakfast yet by the time
the bell rang.
= Neither Mr Usrok nor Miss Ucrit had eaten breakfast yet by the time the
bell rang.
= Mr Usrok had not eaten breakfast yet by the time the bell rang and Miss

The two simple sentences above can be combined into


compound sentences and they are :

= Both several students and Mr Usrok are not joining my lesson now
because of a certain reason.
= Neither several students nor Mr Usrok is joining my lesson now
because of a certain reason.
= Several students are not joining my lesson now because of a certain
reason and Mr Usrok is not either.
= Several students are not joining my lesson now because of a certain
reason and neither is Mr Usrok.

8. Past Continuous Tense : S + to be (was / were) + Ving+ O +........


Example :

a. Mr Usrok was not watching TV at 8 o’clock ( =sharp ) last night.


b. Mr Usrok’s friends were not watching TV at 8 o’clock last night.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into


compound sentences and they are :

= Both Mr Usrok and his friends were not watching TV at 8 o’clock


last night.
= Neither Mr usrok nor his friends were watching TV AT 8 o’clock
last night.
= Mr Usrok was not watching TV at 8 o’clock ( =sharp ) last night and
his friends were not either.
= Mr Usrok was not watching TV at 8 o’clock ( =sharp ) last night and
neither were his friends.
= Not only Mr Usrok but also his friends were not watching TV at 8
o’clock last night.

Example :

a. Mr Usrok can not have submitted his task by the end of this week.
b. Miss Ucrit can not have submitted her task by the end of this week.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into


compound sentences and they are :

= Both Mr Usrok and Miss Ucrit can not have submitted their task
by the end of this week.
= Neither Mr Usrok nor Miss Ucrit can have submitted her task by
the end of this week.
= Mr Usrok can not have submitted his task by the end of this week
and Miss Ucrit can not either.
= Mr Usrok can not have submitted his task by the end of this week
and neither can Miss Ucrit.
= Not only Mr Usrok but also Miss Ucrit can not have submitted
her task by the end of this week.

Example :

compound sentences and they are :

= Both Mr Usrok and Miss Ucrit could not have finished their
homework by the end of September last year.
=Neither Mr Usrok nor Miss Ucrit could have finished her homework
by the end of September last year.
= Mr Usrok could not have finished his homework by the end of
September last year and Miss Ucrit could not either.

11. Present Perfect Continous Tense : S + have / has + been + Ving + O + .....
Example :

b. Mr Usrok’s friends have not been playing football for 15 years.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into


compound sentences and they are :

= Both Mr Usrok and his friends have not been playing football for
15 years.
= Neither Mr Usrok nor his friends have been playing football for
15 years.
= Mr Usrok has not been playing football for 15 years and his friends
have not either.
= Mr Usrok has not been playing football for 15 years and neither
have his friends.
= Not only Mr Usrok but also his friends have not been playing

The two simple sentences above can be combined into

subjects for 2 hours before they went to sleep.
= Neither Mr Usrok nor his friends had been studying their
subjects for 2 hours before they went to sleep.
= Mr Usrok had not been studying his subjects for 2 hours before he

13. Present Future Continuous Tense : S + ( will, can , shall , must, may ) + be

Example :

tomorrow.
b. Miss Ucrit may not be studying English in her classroom at this time
tomorrow.

The two simple sentences above can be combined into


compound sentences and they are :

= Both Mr Usrok and Miss Ucrit may not be studying English in their
classroom at this time tomorrow.
= Neither Mr Usrok nor Miss Ucrit may be studying English in her
classroom at this time tomorrow.
= Mr Usrok may not be studying English in his classroom at this time
tomorrow and Miss Ucrit may not either.
= Mr Usrok may not be studying English in his classroom at this time
tomorrow and neither may Miss Ucrit.

Example :

The two simple sentences above can be combined into


compound sentences and they are :

= Both Mr Usrok and Miss Ucrit might not be doing their test when
the teacher came to the classroom yesterday.
