Catalog Description

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the skill, knowledge and attitude required to
determine approximate numerical solutions to mathematical problems which cannot always be solved
by conventional analytical technique, and to demonstrate the importance of selecting the right
numerical technique for a particular application, and carefully analyzing and interpreting the results
obtained.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of common numerical methods and how they are used to
obtain approximate solutions to otherwise intractable mathematical problems.
2. Apply numerical methods to obtain approximate solutions to mathematical problems.
3. Derive numerical methods for various mathematical operations and tasks, such as
interpolation, differentiation, integration, the solution of linear and nonlinear
equations, and the solution of differential equations.

Course Outcomes

On completion of this course, the students will be able to

CO1: Define and describe the Algebraic and Transcendental Equation and solve the problems
using appropriate Numerical methods.
CO2: Describing the interpolation methods to find intermediate values in given graphical or
tabulated data.
CO3: Describe and Define the sets of linear simultaneous equations and solve the problems
using Cholesky’s (Crout’s) method, Gauss-Seidel iteration and relaxation methods.
CO4: Describe and apply Trapezoidal and Simpson’s Rule to solve given integration
problems.
CO5: Define and describe Runga-Kutta method and Euler’s Method to solve differential
equations
