over the path of integration 𝐶: 𝒓(𝑡) = 𝑡 2 𝒊 + 3𝑡𝒋 + 2𝑡𝒌 for the values 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 1.
(7 marks)

(c) Evaluate the line integral ∫𝐶 𝑭. 𝑑𝒓 for 𝑭(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 2 𝒊 − (𝑥 + 𝑦)𝒋 , over the curve
𝑪: 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 9, 𝑦 ≥ 0 from (3,0) to (-3,0).
(10 marks)

Question 2

(a) Evaluate the double integral

2 +𝑦 2
∬(𝑒 𝑥 )𝑑𝑦𝑑𝑥
𝑅
where R is the semicircular region bounded by the x-axis and the upper half of the circle
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 1.
(5 marks)

(b) Verify Green’s theorem for 𝑭(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑥𝑦)𝒊 + (𝑥𝑦 2 − 𝑒 𝑦 )𝒋 over region R which is a
triangle with vertices (0, 0), (3, 0) and (0, 5).

Question 3
1
(a) Given the complex function 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑧 2 (1−𝑧 2 ) ,

(i) state the poles and their orders.

(3 marks)
(ii) calculate the residue at each pole.
(7 marks)

(b) Form the Fourier Series for the function

0 , 0<𝑡<𝜋
𝑓(𝑡) = {
1 , 𝜋 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 2𝜋
where 𝑓(𝑡 + 2𝜋) = 𝑓(𝑡).
(15 marks)

Question 4

(a) Using the power method and four iterations, find the dominant eigenvalue and the
4 0 1
corresponding eigenvector for the matrix [−2 1 0]. Perform all calculations correct to
−2 0 1
three decimal places.
(5 marks)

(b) Using Euler’s method, compute an estimate for 𝑦(1.0) for the initial value problem
𝑑𝑦
= 𝑦 2 𝑒 𝑥𝑦 , 𝑦(0.5) = 0.5.
𝑑𝑥
Use a step size of 0.1 and perform all calculations correct to four decimal places.
(5 marks)

(c) A machine that can run at different speeds produces bearings, of which certain number are
defective. The number of defective items produced per hour depends upon the speed of the
machine (in revolutions per second, rev/s). Data collected for eight different speeds is
shown below.

Question 5

(a) An electrical component is made up of two independent circuits, 𝐶1 and 𝐶2 which are
designed to last for a year. In the past, circuit 𝐶1 has 95% chance of lasting for a year while
circuit 𝐶2 has 96% chance of lasting for a year. The electrical component will work as long
as one of the circuits is still working. Find the probability that at the end of a year

(i) both circuits are working,

(3 marks)
(ii) the electrical component is working.

(b) (i) The volume of contents of bottles in a production line is normally distributed with
a mean of 500 ml and a standard deviation of 2.5 ml. Bottles are to be refilled if the
volume is less than 495 ml. If the production level on a particular day is 1000
bottles, what is the expected number of bottles to be refilled that day?
(3 marks)

(ii) The length of steel rods produced by a machine is normally distributed with a
standard deviation of 0.8 cm. It is found that 1% of the same type of steel rods are
less than 24 cm long. Calculate the mean length of all the steel rods produced.

0.34 mm. The desired mean thickness of the lenses is 3.20 mm.

(i) By setting up suitable hypothesis statements, conduct a hypothesis test to determine

if the desired mean thickness for the lenses are met at the 𝛼 = 0.05 significance
level.
(7 marks)
(ii) Verify your answer in part (c)(i) using the confidence interval method.
