Instructions: This paper consists of FIVE (5) questions. Answer any FOUR (4) questions in the
answer booklet provided. All questions carry equal marks.
Question 1
(a) Use Lagrange multiplier to calculate the maximum volume of a cylinder with radius 𝑟 and
height ℎ given 𝑟 + ℎ = 12 cm.
(10 marks)
(b) Calculate the work done by force 𝐹(𝑟) = 𝑥𝑦𝑖 + 2𝑥𝑗 over the path of integration given as
𝑟(𝑡) = (𝑒 𝑡 )𝑖 + (𝑐𝑜𝑠ℎ𝑡)𝑗 for the values 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 2.
(9 marks)
(c) Evaluate the double integral ∬(𝑥 2 + 𝑦)𝑑𝐴 over the region 𝑅 bounded by 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1 and
1 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 2.
(6 marks)
Question 2
(a) Let 𝑅 be the region bounded by the vertical lines 𝑥 = −1 and 𝑥 = 2 and by the parabolas
𝑦 = −𝑥 2 and 𝑦 = 1 + 𝑥 2 . Verify Green’s theorem for 𝐹 = 𝑦𝑖 + 4𝑥𝑗.

(c) Show that the Fourier transform 𝐹(𝜔), for the two-sided exponential pulse

Question 4
Figure 1
(b) Suppose that the force acting on a column that helps to support a building is normally
distributed with mean 15.0 kips and standard deviation 1.25 kips.
Question 5
(a) A chemical plant is required to maintain ambient sulfur levels in the working environment
atmosphere at an average level of no more than 12.50. The results of 64 randomly timed
measurements of sulfur level produced a sample mean of 𝑥= 13.50 and a sample standard
deviation of 𝑠 = 2.91. A hypothesis testing is carried out to see if there is any evidence that
the chemical plant is in violation of the working code, at 𝛼 = 0.05 level of significance.
(b) (i) Use Euler’s method with ℎ = 0.05 to approximate 𝑦(0.3) correct to three decimal

(ii) Show that the analytical solution of this initial value problem is the same with the
answer in part (i).
