A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS

Most editor’s letters seem to begin with a hefty dose of self-congratulation. But
as we sit here about to go to print on this first issue of Galleri Magazine all
there really is to say is a very sincere and deeply felt Thank You…

Thank you to all the people around us who have helped in so many ways
in making this project happen. Thank you to all the support team at Red
Dog, China Stylus and Red Cactus who put up with us as we gave way
too much time to the magazine and not enough time to them. Thank you for
the unfaltering enthusiasm that so many have shown for the idea. And thank
you to all those who have stepped up to provide all manner of help, support
and assistance.

But most of all, thank you to all the artists and contributors who have given us
their work. The response has been incredible. We have enough great material
to fill the first three issues already. The diversity, quality and energy of what
you see here proves what we already know – that Hong Kong has a thriving,
ever-growing creative community that is better than some, and equal to many
others in the world.

Profile Kenneth Tsang graduated at Baylor University, Waco, Texas


in August, 2006; major in Studio Art. His concentration was oil
painting and graphic design. He also spent time in Tokyo, Japan
and Florence, Italy studying art history, drawing and painting. His
first Painting Exhibition was held in Cultural Art Center, Temple,
Texas in March 2006. Later on, he organized and exhibited a joint
photography and design exhibition in Baylor University in May 2006.
He won the best of painting scholarship in the 2006 Emerging Texas
Artist Award in May 2006. In 2007, Kenneth started working on two
photography projects; “my grandparents” and “the rainbow village”
and a whole new series of painting. Kenneth is currently working as
a graphic designer at AJL Photography Ltd.

Profile Many ancient cultures believe the camera captures the soul
of it’s subjects. Within my work I feel this to be true. It seems a beautiful
expression of the nude form is not always just a beautiful piece of art,
but can also be an experience of enlightenment and understanding
of who we are as a physical and emotional beings. In my work I’m
interested in showing this energetic flow of “Chi” that we radiate.

Profile Part designer – part machine – part comb-over, Jay is known


as one segment of the Robot collective and mastermind behind Salon
de Pigeon (not hair salon, nor pigeon boutique). Once described
as a “granddaddy of cool” by a young upstart, Jay is keen to retain
his street credibility by creating imagery that resonates with young
trendy folk, whilst in reality he secretly enjoys wearing slippers and
consuming digestive biscuits.

General History Graduated a BFA in year 2005 at Whitecliffe


College of Arts and Design in New Zealand majoring Fashion
Design. After graduated, moved back to Hong Kong and worked
as an assistant Fashion Designer for nearly 2 years. I have no formal
training in photography at school or in any other institutions. I took
pictures as my hobby, it all started in year 2005 when I received
a Lomo Coloursplash camera as a Christmas present. By self-
experiencing and trial, now taking photographs became one of my
daily activities.

Profile John-John was what they used to call him. But now he is all
grown up and faces the responsibilities that society has for him to
take care of. Optimistic to take on this task, he navigates the world,
ensuring a bright future.

With so many styles out there, he explores to find a hole to dig himself
into. Showered by dust, he is always one step behind the trendsetters.
Eager, all he knows is to stick with what has worked for him whilst
they still called him by his nickname. And that is to be challenged
and excited for the new and unknown. To having faith and taking
that one extra step outside one’s comfort zone. And tackling all the
opportunities the world throws at him with humility. Wisest is the man
who is always willing to learn. And that is something he can only
hope he will stick with. To the beginning...

Name Eamonn O’Boyle

Profile Eamonn O’Boyle graduated from the National College of


Art and Design Dublin, Ireland in 2001 and received a BA Hons
degree in Visual Communications (majoring in illustration). He has
been living and working in Hong Kong since that time as a freelance
illustrator and painter. He has illustrated for numerous corporate and
fashion related clients such as Time Magazine, Esprit, Nike, Seibu
and Lane Crawford. He has also illustrated six children’s books to
date and is currently writing & illustrating his first book ‘Mr Green’s
Nest’. Prior to moving to HK Eamonn exhibited his work at several
galleries in Dublin - Whyte’s, Oisin and the Blue Leaf gallery.

EXHIBITION 010 NICOLA RUSSELL

Profile: I graduated with a studio art degree from New York University,
where I was influenced by performance art and photographers such as
Cindy Sherman and Nikki S. Lee. My work generally gravitated towards
themes of identity, race and sexuality. While in New York I worked with
local photographers Lyle Ashton Harris and Michael Lavine.

Since moving back to Hong Kong I have been working as a graphic


designer and now am the art director of the publishing company PPP
Company Ltd.

I still take pictures at my own leisure and would like to continue making
conceptual photographic art projects. In the near future I am thinking of
either going back to school or taking some time off to travel the world.

EXHIBITION 011 START FROM ZERO

Profile START stands for Street ART, Stencil ART and Sticker ART.
There are two meanings of “Start From Zero”; 1) He started performing
street art from nothing, i.e. “zero”. He hopes that when someone
sees his stickers, they will be like him and start doing street art from
“zero”. 2) It can be a slogan for encouraging people when they are
unhappy, down or miserable. He also wants people to remind their
friends of this slogan when the same things happen.

Apart from using stickers, “Start From Zero” also uses wheat pastes,
spraying on stencils with different characters and illustrations to
convey his message on the streets.“Start From Zero” does solo street
art as well as collaboration street art. He is also an active member of
a Hong Kong street art crew – ST/ART.

Besides performing street art, ”Start From Zero” will release various
products; T shirts, badges caps, key chains and other accessories.
These are the additional media for Start From Zero to more widely
spread his message to everyone.

Profile “Movement” and “The Moment”.


I remember a friend, who studied photography, asked me once
the difference between these two terms. To me, “Movement”, is
something that will never stop, an action. “The Moment” is a frame,
an everlasting action inside the moment. I don’t know if this is correct,
but that’s my answer.

I’m Isabell Chan. I was born and have lived all my life in Hong Kong,
and I fell in love with photography since I took a couple of shots of
my friends, where I could see “The Moment”. It was right then that
I decided to give up my routine office job and throw myself into
photography, trying to find a way to do better, and wanting to learn
more about it, because I love it.

I worked with Ike, a great black & white photographer, for half a
year, then from early 2006 I joined the Red Dog team, where I
have been based until now. I have been focused on implementing
what I’ve learnt into my own photography; nothing fancy, just simple
and natural things. But mostly, I love catching the moment inside the
movement. “The Moment”, which lasts forever and ever.

Name ks

Profile ks (wor.ks.1.ow) has been a pioneering street artist in Hong


Kong since 2000. Starting off using traditional graffiti techniques,
he has also been using posters, wheatpaste and stickers as his street
medium. The “my little spokesman” project can be seen across Hong
Kong, spreading his message to all people who pay attention on
the street. ks is one of the original members of the ST/ART street art
collective. He is also involved in illustration work and design.

Biography Tiffanycheetah is a Hong Kong artist. In 2006, she


started working in a graphic house creating mostly illustrations and
graphics. She has always been interested in illustration and creativity
in general and puts as much time to enjoy herself every moment
she can.

She looks for inspiration all the time that she encounters, lives for
and witnesses, especially the most obvious ones. My illustrations are
deeply inspired by occurrences impacting our daily lives – like the
keep fit trend. She hates fat, she hates slim… and all the things going
wrong in the world. She loves to create nude girls and fat girls to go
against the negative thinking of the human body. In recent years she
has fallen in love with hair.

Name Justo Cascante III

Profile Justo Cascante has been living in Hong Kong for 14 years
now; He’s originally from Manila Philippines. After graduating Fine Arts
major in Painting, he started to work as a Special Effects Make-up Artist
and a Senior Sculptor. After few years he moved to Hong Kong to work
for Tsui Harks film outfit and production house as a multimedia artist
using different mediums to produce visual effects for movies including
3d animation.

Because of its fast pace life and fast intake of information painting and
drawing becomes a cooling system to balance himself to produce more
quality works. After experiencing a series of mild depression he started
to paint beautiful and happy images and need not to see the shadows
of his pain. For in the process of his narrative, and in the process of a
living expression, my works offered me a kind of balance that revealed
both the Beauty of Nature and the poignancy of this life.

Like a Code that needs to be broken… his art can be viewed in many
ways. Interpretation becomes the responsibility of my viewers. He is
a simple man with a complex story. The burden of his complexity is
but him alone. He therefore leaves with you, his viewers the simple
narrative that invokes the poetic license of his artistry.

Justo had four one-man exhibition in Hong Kong and Philippines and
fifteen group exhibitions. His commercial works on computers open up
a new view on how he sees his future paintings based from patterned
and pre-digested images from pop culture and famous local everyday
icons. Hopefully they will be transparent and blended in terms of form
and content.

Name Andrew Loiterton

Profile Andrew came to Hong Kong in 1993 after completing his


studies in Sydney, Australia. Following a number of years working in
various design firms, Andrew decided it was high time to down tools
and attribute due attention to his long-time passion, photography.

The subject matter of Andrew’s photography is reflective of his diverse


interests. His professional assignments have taken him from the heights
of fashion to the peaks of the Himalaya, from overheated studios in
Hong Kong to the frozen tundra of Alaska.

Now based full-time in Hong Kong, Andrew set up AJL Photography


in 2000, and provides both digital and traditional photographic
services on location and in-studio to local and international clients.

Profile Celestial are a Hong Kong musical collective and what you
see here is the artwork created by producer, Peter Millward, for the
CD sleeve of the fourth Celestial album, “Electric Road”. The photo-
montage (created from scratch by Pete) portrays a surreal Hong Kong
street - but don’t bother looking for it, it doesn’t really exist. “I love
Photo-Shop!” says Pete. Although “Electric Road” is the name of a
real street, the album isn’t really about that street, but rather the name
serves as a descriptor for an imagined soundscape, or subterranean
mind space, somewhere nearer the bottom of Hong Kong’s harbour, if
the underwater dub electronica which makes up the album is anything
to go by. And the sleeve is an apt reflection of this, like the false
memory of a perfect (imagined) past.

Fashion Background
When I finished it, I held out much hope for my future in fashion, I tried Shatin Technical Institute: Certificate in Fashion Design
to participated a few fashion contests. Two of them in which I was Nagoya Fashion Contest 1998: Honorable Mention Award
qualified to get into final stage. One was Nagoya Fashion Contest Brother Cup International: Participant Country

EVOLUTIONIST GRAFFITI – To be true to the spontaneity and the


verve of the graffiti movement without having any limits on techniques
and support.

Profile The French born graffiti artist L1ES ONE is one of the most
exciting artists from the burgeoning world graffiti/street art scene.
He brings his incisive style and vision to create a satirical portrait
of our contemporary society. Visually sophisticated and conceptually
provocative, his images challenge global trends hypocrisy, hyper-
consumerism and social control. He centers his work around questions
whose answers underline the mechanisms of advertising and
propaganda which invade our public spaces. The visual codes used
by L1ES ONE highlight our modern society products, myths and heroes.
His challenge is to live creatively in a technological world, accepting
this jaded world on which we impose our faltered thoughts, and to
find a harmony between nature and technology.

L1ES ONE started wall-painting in the streets at the age of 11 in the


late 1980s. Through the years, he has been continuously renewing
his work doing wall painting, interior design, object design, art show,
ads, logos, communication, live happenings and fashion for private
companies, such as Sony, MTV, Toyota, etc., while staying true to the
graffiti essence: an ephemeral and activist art which has to serve an
alternative cause far from the politically correct, far from the system.
After exhibiting all around the world from New York, Paris, Madrid,
to London, he is now based in Hong Kong and he is willing to bring
his energy and his art to the Asian scene.

In this test Alex uses Jaycow’s black spiral tail hat and styles Sevara as

While drum ’n’ bass events are arguably the most significant
phenomenon in underground Hong Kong clubland these days,
Arkham says not much has really changed for him. “I still play tracks
produced even up to 12 years ago and frankly most people are
none the wiser (any longer than that and you can probably tell the
difference). The main difference between now and 10 years ago
with regards to the scene is that people, on the whole, at least know
what the music is. When Mashup were doing it, people would be
like, ’What the fuck?’.”

Summary An exhibition allowing artists to explore the idea of
lasering away at seven layers of ply that make a deck and add
their own distinctive mark. A select group of artists globally have
contributed their works to explore this new technology. Only 50
limited edition decks will be produced per artist. The aim of the show
is to have a series of unique decks that collectors may choose to ride
or display. The exhibition had its first show at the MTV Gallery Space
in Sydney, Australia in April and will be followed later in the year by
New York, LA, Japan and finally a scheduled tour of Europe.

Project The Racks Calendar was an initiative of Red Dog Studios,


ChinaStylus and Racks Billiards Club (Lisa S, Min Yoo & Drafus
Chow). Planned as an annual publication, it was created to raise
money for the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation. The limited
print run calendar runs from July 2007 through to June 2008 and
features twelve of Hong Kong’s best known and most wanted celebrity
models. Photography was by Timon Wehrli at Red Dog Studio, with
design and art direction by ChinaStylus. Credit also goes to Diesel
for their generous support. Everyone involved in the project provided
their skills and services for free. With 100% of all proceeds being
donated, the project aims to raise $500,000 for charity.

Profile Born in Brighton in 1969, Birch began painting at a very


early age under the guidance of his parents. His mother is an
accomplished painter and art teacher and his father is a graphic
and interior designer. Birch moved to Hong Kong in 1996 where he
eventually took up a professional career as an artist. He is now well
established as a leading Hong Kong contemporary artist who is fast
building a reputation internationally as both a painter and a multi-
media artist with his finger on the pulse of street culture.

Chosen as winner of 2004’s Schoeni Asian Art Award by the


Sovereign Group, Birch is known for his painting, in particular his
portraits, which have drawn much attention due to a number of high-
profile commissions. He has also held a series of extremely successful
solo exhibitions in the past few years as well as finding time to curate
one of Hong Kong’s largest group shows with over 30 artists involved.
His current projects include not only curating the inaugural exhibition
at the new 10 Chancery Lane Warehouse space in Hong Kong,
but also a large-scale collaborative project with photographer Wing
Shya and Japanese fashion brand Evisu – a solo exhibition with a
substantial number of commissioned works.

A FINAL THOUGHT

We love the fact that we live and work in one of the most creative
cities in the world. We love that despite being busy, manic and about
as urban as any city can get, just 30 minutes away we can find
ourselves in a beautiful country park or on a beach.We love that there
is so much for our hearts, minds and eyes to appreciate in this town.

But what good is all that if we can’t see more than 20 metres in front
of us and the air we breathe becomes toxic?

It was recorded that Hong Kong only had around 40 clear days
throughout the whole of 2006.

This is our way to ask everyone to start stopping. Stop the pollution.
Stop the waste. Stop standing by, start doing something.

A couple of points about HK air pollution to get you in the mood:

• The method for measuring the API in Hong Kong is not comparable
to any other scale in the world. Therefore when the weather report
states there is low pollution, it is still higher than most cities in the
world

• The top polluters for air pollution in Hong Kong are power plants
causing 92% of the total emissions of S02 and 50% of NOx and
respirable suspended particles (RSP)

• In 2003 CLP among others started to burn coal instead of LNG to


produce power
