Amusement Park Project 2017 ------Ms.

Arthur

1. Each group- (4-5 students) will build a ride you may find at an amusement park.
2. Ms. Arthur will give each student 3 index cards.
3. Each student will choose 2 different terms from the list below. One term per index card.
You cannot use the same term more than once!!! Decide as a group which terms
each student will use.
FORCE and MOTION TERMS
maximum potential energy
maximum kinetic energy
static friction
magnetism
rolling kinetic friction
sliding kinetic friction
fluid friction-water
centripetal force
gravitational force
momentum (ex. before and after collisions)
fluid friction-air resistance, water friction
projectile motion
Newton’s First Law of Motion (inertia)
Newton’s Second Law of Motion (acceleration),
Newton’s Third Law of Motion (action-reaction)

On each index card, write:

Term
Definition
Explanation of how that term applies to your ride
Your name

EXAMPLE

Term---Static Friction
Definition—is a force that resists the movement of two
objects against one another when the objects are initially at rest.
Explanation of how that term applies to your ride---At the top of the ride, just before you go down, your body is
at rest and it is touching the slide. It does not move because of static friction.
Your name---Karen Arthur

4. On the ride, you must have:

 50 points---Name of the ride and a working model (sketch) of a ride found at an
amusement park. Ex. roller coaster, Ferris wheel, merry go-round.
 10 points---A colored drawing of your final ride.
 10 points---One index card per student with 6-7 sentences of a scary or
funny experience at an amusement park. Real or made up.
 30 points---Two index cards per student describing how the force and motion terms apply to your ride.
 A list of the names of the members of your group.
 Project Duration Wednesday 02-01-17 through Friday 01-03-17.
 SEE MS. ARTHUR’S SAMPLE PROJECTS, IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS.
AS A GROUP, DISCUSS AND DECIDE ON:

1. WHAT TYPE OF RIDE YOU WANT TO BUILD.

2. WHAT MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED.
3. WHO WILL BRING WHAT MATERIALS.
4. NAME OF THE RIDE.
5. DRAW A SKETCH OF YOUR RIDE.

Period 1—8 groups of 5

Period 4—6 groups of 5, 1 group of 4
Period 5--6 groups of 5 students, 2 groups of 4 students
Period 6--6 groups of 5 students, 2 groups of 4 students
