First Steps
Summer Semester 2019
During the Welcome Session you will get to know the WeltWeit team, as well as the other participants in the
program. We will discuss the First Steps and answer any questions you may have.
In a casual atmosphere you can find out more about upcoming events and extra-curricular activities that the
International Office as well as other organizations (like ESN Augsburg) have to offer. This is also a great
opportunity to get in contact with other international students who have just arrived in Augsburg.
On orientation day you will be officially welcomed to the university by school officials. You will receive useful
information about organizations and services from the university; i.e. the AAA, the Language Center, and
the Center for Computer Services.
Directly after the orientation day, there will be an introduction to Digicampus especially for WeltWeit
students. Here you will receive information about the course offering at the university. Your tutor will
accompany you and help you register for your courses.
Get to know Augsburg a bit more! Tours in both German and English will be offered.
This introduction is mandatory for all students who will take German language courses at the Language
Center. You will receive information about the course registration opening the following day and complete a
written placement test, which will rank your German language skills. You will take the courses that
correspond with your respective German level.

Since you will be staying in Germany for a short period, we recommend buying a prepaid SIM card
without a contract. There are many service providers which offer prepaid cards that include internet flat
rates.
Prepaid cards themselves are free, meaning you only have to pay the amount you use for calling,
texting, and internet. Prepaid cards start from about 10 Euro. You can buy them in supermarkets (Lidl,
ALDI, etc.), in electronic stores (e.g. MediaMarkt, Saturn), or drug stores (Rossmann, dm, Müller, etc.)
They are usually located at the checkout counter.
We recommend that you complete this step with your tutor. He or she can help you set up and activate
your SIM card (internet access may be necessary). It may be useful to use the same service provider
that your tutor has, as they will be familiar with the process.
As soon as you have a German cell phone number, please share it with the WeltWeit Team!
You must have a German bank account from which payments and money transfers can be deducted.
Most international students open an account with Stadtsparkasse Augsburg. They have a location very
close to the university, many ATMs throughout the city, and one can use their account on the same
day it has been opened. At other banks (for example Deutsche Bank) this may take up to a few weeks.
In order to open an account, please make an appointment at a banking affiliation.
Stadtsparkasse Univiertel: Phone nr.: 0821/32557385, email address: gs036@sska.de
Necessary documents:
- a German telephone number (this is necessary for online banking)
- your address in Germany (you will receive your GiroCard in the mail in about 2 weeks)
- your letter of acceptance (this serves as proof that you are indeed a student)
- your rental agreement
- (your tax payer ID* from your home country)
* The tax payer’s ID is used to verify your identity. If you do not have to pay taxes in your home
country, then you must not provide a number, but rather sign a form that states that you are not
required to pay taxes.
We recommend that you transfer the semester fee directly after you have completed the opening of
your bank account while you are still at the bank. You can ask a bank employee to assist you with the
money transfer.
You can find the amount (114.85 €) and all necessary information for the transfer on your letter of
acceptance.
You need a receipt for the money transfer as evidence that it was deducted from your account. This
is required to enroll yourself at the university.

In order to enroll at the University of Augsburg, you will need to have valid health insurance. The
following options are available to you:
We strongly suggest that you take out German public health insurance!
Public health insurance costs about 91,00 € per month. If you are publically insured, you are not
required to pay any charges for checkups at a doctor’s office or treatment in a hospital. This insurance
also covers the expenses of many medications. With public health insurance, you are also insured
throughout Europe, as well as Schengen countries.
TK has a representative on campus at the university. Your contact partner is Mr. Michael Fuchs:
Email: michael.fuchs@tk.de
Telephone: 0049-160-7009681
You can find Mr. Fuchs every Wednesday from 09:00 to 14:00 h in the Mensa foyer.
Mr. Fuchs will also be in the foyer every day at the beginning of the semester (from April 8 to
April 18) from 9:00 to 14:00 h.
>> Health Insurance from your Home Country / Private German Health Insurance
In order to continue with matriculation, the health insurance must meet the following requirements (see
Info Sheet Visa und Health Insurance):
Please note: Only in exceptional cases do insurances from other countries / private insurances meet
the requirements that allow one to be enrolled at the university!
Please note: Private health insurance may seem like the best option at first, since it costs significantly
less than public health insurance plans. However, if you have private health insurance, you must be
prepared to pay for all the expenses for medical treatments and medications yourself. Part of these
costs will be reimbursed by the insurance agency; however, this can take up to a year.
