Topic-A Thing of beauty

Poem by John Keats

GENRAL OBJECTIVES-

1. To read the given poem and learn to appreciate, enjoy it.

2. To develop the reading and comprehension skill of a poem.

SPECIAL AIMS & OBJECTIVES-

1. A Thing of beauty is a constant source of joy. Beauty is an eternal truth. One should learn to understand
the importance of Nature.
2. To acquaint the students about the poet-John Keats in a brief manner.
(British Romantic Poet, although trained to be a surgeon, he decided to devote himself completely to the
poetry, he delights his readers through the gift of his language. He sees beauty in everything and he
writes this poem.)

INTRODUCTOIN & WARM –UP-The teacher will ask three students to come in front of the class and read
three situations.

1. How do you feel when you are presented a bouquet of flowers?

2. How many like sunrise, sunset, moonlit night, drizzling morning….,

3. What happens when you are unhappy at any point of time? What is/ are your expectations?

Possible answers from personal experiences or of others will be as brainstorming among students, leading
towards the title of poem.

METHODOLOGY-

1. The teacher will give a loud reading of the poem with proper stress & intonation.

2. Inter-active method will be adopted by the teacher where day-to-day examples will be used for simple
paraphrasing and comprehension of the stanzas.

3. Students will be shown a power point presentation, which will help in understanding of the poem with some
visual inputs by making it interesting.

GIST-Man himself is the root cause of his suffering. We become happy when we come in contact with things of
beauty. Thus beauty is a boon.

Beauty moves away the pall of sadness. It is a source of happiness.

Nature –A fountain of Immortal drink.


TEACHING –AIDS-Visual individual participatory presentation-(VIPPcards), LCD projector, Text-book,
chalk, duster, if possible any physical properties can be shown as a stimuli.

TIME –5 minutes for introduction, 5 minutes reading of the text, 15 minutes for presentation, paraphrasing and
comprehension. Last 5 minutes for recapitulation and home work assignment.

CLASS-WORK- students will note the important points of the poem. Difficult words will be discussed,
dictionary can be used and on the first stanza which was taught, some questions can be framed as an evaluation
of understanding.

FOLLOW-UP- as Home work assignment students will be given some questions and attempt the text book
questions already discussed in the class.

SLOW-LEARNERS- The slow-learners will be asked questions in between the teaching to evaluate whether
understanding has taken place. Simple tasks will be given for their better understanding.
