PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Human development topic Jesus Topic
Six Come Follow Me (Prayer) People can Make Good Decisions Jesus Taught His Followers to
Pray
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
In year six, students learn about a unit of work that covers a variety of topics which will help develop students’ understanding about prayer. Students will
learn about making choices that are greater than themselves, making sure to consider what is right and wrong as well as where to seek guidance from.
Students will understand that making choices can impact on those around them. The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-12) will be used to introduce the
Beatitudes and begin creating that connection between making choices and God’s Christian Moral Framework.

Students will follow this by discovering how Jesus began his teachings about prayer. Students will be immersed into a variety of bible passages which give
examples of times Jesus has prayed, specifically relating to The Lord’s Prayer. Students will explore deeply The Lord’s Prayer and wonder about its
meaning through identifying the seven petitions and their meanings. Students will understand the relevance of The Lord’s Prayer to the Beatitudes and how
they summarise important teachings for Christians.

Students will continue to develop their learning through understanding how we can be strengthened by prayer to choose good. Students will develop an
understanding of how relationships are built through trust and respect as well as being able to listen, share and be at ease to sit in silence. These values of
good relationships relate closely with how to develop a relationship with God through using prayer.
Students will learn a variety of ways they can pray. An understanding of the three forms of prayer, Vocal, Meditation and Contemplative prayer, as well as
the different forms of prayer, Blessing and Adoration, Petition, Intercession, Thanksgiving and Praise, will develop students’ knowledge of ways to pray and
how when going the Mass they pray all the forms of prayer together as a community of faith.
Students will delve into the understanding of what liturgy means and how we can participate in a liturgy to develop a relationship with God. Students will
continue to develop their understanding of prayer and their relationship with God through discovering the special ways Christians can pray to God. These
include; Participating in Retreats, Spending time in Monasteries, Going on a Pilgrimage, and Daily Life.

Throughout this unit of work students will develop an understanding of prayer, different types of prayer, how prayer can help develop our relationship with
God and how our relationship with God can help us to make good choices.

Catholic World View and Teacher Witness (See Teacher Note) Link with Key Understandings and Learning Points by highlighting
Catholic World View
The Catholic perspective on this unit of work about Prayer is that prayer is a part of every Catholics life. Prayer is an action, thought and feeling
which Catholics believe to help people develop a relationship with God. Through prayer and developing a relationship with God, Catholics
believe that prayer can help us to make good choices and understand the impact of our choices.
Prayer is a large action and ritual of the Catholic teachings and will be developed and nurtured throughout this unit of work.

Teacher Witness
This unit of work focuses on the development of the understanding of Prayer, choices and our relationship with God. As a teacher I understand
that prayer is an action and ritual that is a major part of the Catholic teachings and therefore it needs to be taught, learnt and practiced
regularly in the classroom.
In this unit of work, I am able to bring experiences and examples of engaging in the practice of prayer. Students will have a role model that
understands and knows the importance of developing this ritual and practice. I will provide students with a variety of prayers in a variety of
forms and allow for students to engage with the meanings behind prayers through creating their own. I believe prayer is an important part of a
Catholics life and needs to be nurtured throughout to therefore continuously develop their relationship with God.
