INTRODUCTION

1.1. BACKGROUND
Landscaping refers to any activity that modifies the visible features of an area of land, including:
Living elements, such as flora or fauna; or what is commonly called gardening
The art and craft of growing plants with a goal of creating a beautiful environment within the
landscape
Natural elements such as landforms, terrain shape and elevation, or bodies of water; and
Abstract elements such as the weather and lighting conditions

Landscape is more than just scenery where “LAND” means both a place and the people living there and
“SCAPE” means “to shape”, and also mean association, partnership. A picture representing a section of
natural, inland scenery, as of prairie, woodland, mountains and expanse of natural scenery seen by the
eye in one view. Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor public areas, landmarks, and structures
to achieve environmental, social- behavioral, or aesthetic outcomes.

1.2 OBJECTIVES

To develop the site as a livable space

To promote the site as a functional space for recreational activities, public discussions and
interactions among the users
To understand the different techniques or elements of landscape design with respect to the site.
2. SITE DETAILS
Location: Inside the premises of Department of Architecture Area: 4805.8
sq. ft. /446.74 sq. m.

Design strategy:-

· Our design doesn’t harm any permanent trees in any way.

· It is practical and facilitates ease in construction.
· Materials to be used are available within the campus. (E.g. bricks, wooden log, other
waste materials, etc)
· Provision of sit-out area and pavements so as to make the space welcoming, interactive
and functional.
· Local and practical plant selection with consideration of colors, textures and landscape
features.
· It encompasses sustainable features and eco-friendly environment.
· Design in accordance to health and safety guidelines.
3. DESIGN CONCEPTS
Currently the site chosen for landscape design is unused space. Since our entry from year 2071 B.S. we
have observed this site as an unused space and dumping site of our college. Thus landscape planning is
done in such a way that the usual livable and active place of the site is rejuvenated. With introduction of
landscape elements like outdoor seating, fire place and greenery by using the waste materials which are
available in our campus premises, the site becomes a functional active space for student discussions,
recreation and interaction.

MATERIAL FOR LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Since this design is for design competition our task is to design the landscape of the given site by using
the waste materials available inside the campus area. The materials that are available in our campus
are:-
1. Bricks
2. Wood
3. Gravels
4. Bottles
5. Metals
6. Mud
7. Concrete blocks
Among these materials, we have chosen few which are known as eco-friendly and sustainable
They are:
 Bricks
Bricks are relatively easy to install and maintenance, Long-term maintenance cost is low if the
bricks are installed properly. It is strong, durable and attractive and gives flexibility in creating
pattern, form, texture, shadow, detail, and visual interest. There are lots of waste bricks
available that we have been use mostly. We have been recycled waste bricks in seating space
by creating circular seating space, fire place and pavement in pathways. As rain water can pass
through the joints of bricks easily, preventing runoff .

 Wood
Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other
woody plants. It is also considered as widely used element which enhance the appearance of the
landscape. It is Very hard and gives soak resistance. Wood are easily available in our campus as
our campus itself have many trees. We use wooden logs for the seating purpose. We also use
wooden planks by making it bench for seating. Wood is environment friendly and sustainable
material.

 Gravel
Gravel is also an outdoor paving material that can be installed quickly and easily. When used
for paving, gravel has a very natural and casual appearance. We use gravel also in pavement
around seating area. Gravel will last a lifetime and when laid over landscaping fabric it will
block weeds. Gravel provides excellent drainage, allowing water to readily flow through to the
dirt underneath.

 Bottles
